i'm sorry if this is a stupid question , but mechanics aint my thing.
Is there a rev limiter on a 308 QV , on the rev counter theres a mark at 7500 RPM, I gather you're not supposed to go over this , but what happens if i forget myself , is there a limiter ?

I am not sure about a QV, but I dont believe Ferrari believed in limiters, or limits for that matter. The early cars like my carb GTB dont have anything stoping it from revving until something comes unglued. Watch that tach! And yes, that red line is your limit you want to stay under for the most part. A good engine can go up to 10K, maybe a bit higher, but every time it does your weakening the weakest link. Keep it up there , or keep poking it up there enough times, and youll find out which part is weakest sooner or later :)

There is a limiter that cuts in around 7200-7500, I have only hit it once when I was flat out on a really long straight not long after I got the car, I then just backed off a bit

The redline on 308s is 7700 and the ignition will cut out above that on QVs.

It might depend on the ignition boxes in your 308. Verell says his Canadian 1983 308 limits his revs. My 1985 Euro (Austria) 308 here has seen over 8k (on the track of course) and i have touched 8.5k a few times. Set my new Nick Forza Electromotive XDI ignition to 7.7k and was redlining her yesterday in 2nd gear for a while (been away from home for 2 weeks and wanted to clean her out). i might raise it to 8.5k as she is a strong gal and sounded and felt very string at 7.7 and think i can get another few hundred k rpm out of her from time to time as needed.

WARNING: i have been told your engine wear EXPONENTIALLY gains at higher revs. Verell can probably chime in here about that.

I've seen 10k RPM in US spec QV's without hitting a revlimiter.

You can downshift and defeat the rev limiter. It's also a wonderful way to blow your engine.

    Have you ever done that?

It is very hard to do unless you are completely ignoring the trans.

To overrev a motor on a downshift with a syncro type gear box the trans needs to be forced into gear.

I've missed a shift and taken mine to 10,500RPM free revving... no load..obviously lifted off immediately....

It was at night and the carbon off the valves made lil' starlight twinklies...all over the road behind me in the rear view mirror....

All is well and I am a little more attentive, these days....

I think the rev limit would be the valves floating on the springs, eh???
Or a con rod letting go.....

Normal shifting at marked 7,800RPM is best, IMO.

    I don't think my 88 328 has a rev limit.

No, I haven't, but I heard Britany Spears blew the engine in her 360 by downshifting a few too many gears. Perhaps that's an urban legend?

That I've done. The valve float, not the con rods. My redline is 6800 and no rev limiter (after market rotor). When I first got the car I had valve float in the low 7's in first. I know, I know...not smart. I'm a little more careful now.
