My Oldest sone is getting married Saturday. Last night he asked if he could borrow one of my cars to drive away from the church. He said I could choose the car but not my truck. LOL he knew that was what I would say.
I know he really does not want my X1/9 and the Exige is out because I don't see the bride getting in that thing with her wedding dress. So what he is really asking is for the 308.
There two problems with that, first is third gear synchro is not great. You have to be real gental shifting into third. It has gotten much better since I have been driving the car, last owner let it sit. It's been 26 years since the transaxle oil has been chanced so today I am changing it. Hopefully this will help.
Second problem is I am really worried he will down shift into revers. He has only driven it once and he started to do it then, but I stoped him.
So my question, is there a block someone sales that will fit in to the gate to stop that from happening?

LOL. So the metaphor is "There is no turning back." Hill Engineering has some things, but not quite what you need. But you can use their gate lock as an example and make your own I'm sure. A couple thick plastic washers to cover the reverse slot, a bolt and a nut to hold them in place. And hope he doesn't need to go back to church to change his "I do"

Isn't their gate lock designed to hold it in reverse?

I think so. But the same principle applies is what I was saying. All you need to do is block the R slot. And I doubt he needs it locking. Just some plastic shims to avoid marring and a bolt and nut to hold them in place.

I've think I've seen somewhere else a gate with a slide or something to prevent Reverse once the lever exits the slot. But seems too complicated.

Just tell your son he's buying if he grinds the gears. :)

Seems like it would be hard to downshift into reverse with a 308 gated shifter?

I assume you know that Ferrari built in a reverse lockout feature into these transmissions. You have to press down on the shift lever to engage reverse. If your son does not push down on the shift lever he should not be able to engage reverse by accident. It is wonderful that you are letting him use the car on this most special of days. Just review the particulars of shifting this transmission with him. I'm sure he will be fine with it.

To damn funny! no turning back, no reversing! I did not think of the metaphor. I like your idea of the washers.

No I did not know that. On my 308 you don’t have to push down, it will go right into revers. I have a 78 with a Euro motor and transmission. I don’t have a record of when it was installed but it was probably around 80-82. Maybe I should pull the gate off and see what is up
    Thanks for the info

I found a tread about the lock out. I went and look at the gate. It looks like the block and the shifter are missing each other. Perhaps my shifter is stuck down. I will look at it more tomorrow
    Thanks guys.

There should be a little tab on the bottom of the gate that will block reverse. Sometimes these get worn. The other thing is your shifter may be stuck pushed down. Mine was at it had sat for 30 years. Trying gently pushing up and down on it to see if you can free it up.

Do you have this "fin" on the underside of the shift gate? Mine had been ground down by the previous owner not pressing down enough on the shifter to engage reverse. It was at the point where it was not doing it's job as a reverse lockout. I built up some material with a welder and re-shaped the fin with a file and now it works as intended

Yes I have it but it is worn down to the point of just touching the shifter. I will need to have it built back up. In the mean time I am going to make a spacer for the shifter. I will take the knob off and slide it down on the rod. This should make it where it wont go into revers till you push down on the shifter.

I understand wanting to make your son's big day very special. It sounds like you shouldn't be investing in parts - you would be better off using time training him how to properly use the car and how be responsible with it. OR, don't let him use the car because he clearly doesn't know how to drive it....

I mean if he doesn't know how to dance, his bride to be is making him take lessons for their big moment at the reception, right?

ALSO check what kind of dress the bride is wearing - if the bottom is very poofy, she's not going to want to get in/out of the 308, too. Or maybe he drives the car there, they take a limo to the reception and you take it from there. This is one of those "you should check with her too" moments. Can you imagine if it messed up her dress or broke down? Wedding days are a whirlwind filled with stress. Unless your car is bulletproof going to work, don't create unknown scenarios.

He learned on a manual and his car in high school was a manual BMW. I was more worried about him forgetting that the 308 has a different shift pattern, I know I have, LOL!
I Talked to him last night about the use of the car. Seems I miss understood. They are only driving it for pictures. He is not going anywhere with it. The big day is Saturday morning so I just did not have much time this week. but all is good.
I still want to fix the block, it is there for a reason.
