Hello gearbox specialists 1983 Mondial QV: Sometimes (no clear pattern when really), with the gearshift in reverse, the car is in first. No particular difficulty related to the box otherwise, shifts smooth incl. 2nd. When the above happens, it feels just like going into reverse normally, except that the car moves forward. Any idea what could be happening - what needs to be adjusted? Thanks for your knowledgeable input!
I'm not familiar with the model but I'm immediately thinking adjustment of cables is what needs attention. Suggest you study the mechanism and ask yourself what's the difference (in terms of what the cables are doing in terms of push/pull) when reverse is selected as against first. Suggest you then apply additional tension so that whatever happens is accentuated just a little bit. Best of luck.
There are two Silentbloc rubber bushings, start there. OEM is available and Unobtanium Supplies makes a delrin replacement. The Silentbloc rubber degrades and doesn't transmit your intentions all the way to the transmission. One is right in front of the engine and one is right behind the shifter.
Thanks Greg. Actually, one push-pull-twist rod. On the box side, the difference is probably pushing back in reverse, vs pulling forward, for first. They are both on the same twisted plane. I haven't been inside the box, and hope never have to
Cheers Brian - you may have a point to check indeed. The rear bushing is 2 years old, the front one, inside the console and below a lot of fragile plastic switch gear... is as old as the car. I have it spare, never dared to dig into the console out of respect for the wiring... I may have to go in there soon. The engine is positioned correctly by the way, on new silent blocks all round. So that front shift shaft bushing may be worn out, and is the only old part in the linkage.
