I just bought a 308 but it hasn't been deliverd and I'm wondering if the reverse lock out you see there was an option in mid 85 for the car.

    Steve,

I don't think it was a Factory option. Classic Coach designed a reverse lock-out similar to the one you posted for their Challenge cars.

All the OEM 308 shift gates I've seen have an extra depth of metal on the underside surface by the reverse slot. This extra metal interferes with the nub on the shift lever so that you cannot engage reverse without pushing Downward on the shifter as you push it forward. Unless you push firmly Downward as you shift, you will not accidentally engage reverse.
Of course, some owners don't like having to apply the extra effort and turn the shift gate around so that the extra metal is to the rear, in the 5th gear location. Because of the angle of the shifter, there is no interference there. I've seen a number of shift gates turned that way.
