OVERVIEW

A low-mileage vehicle, complete with impressive dossier confirming long-term, single-family ownership and DOT/EPA/California emissions compliance. Complete with a current CA smog certificate, this great 412 further benefits from expert inspection and recent service.

Specifications: 4,930 cc DOHC V-12 engine, Bosch fuel injection and Marelli Microplex electronic ignition, 340 hp at 6,000 rpm, five-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel independent suspension with wishbones, coil springs, and self-levelling rear suspension, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 2,700 mm (106.3")

Replacing the curvaceous 365 GTC/4 in 1973 and designated the 365 GT4 2+2, Ferrari's new and highly luxurious four-seater marked an entirely new stylistic direction for Turin's venerable Pininfarina design house. Publicly unveiled at Paris in 1972 and utilizing the basic mechanicals of the 365 GTB/4 "Daytona" Berlinetta, Ferrari's new 2+2 progressed with its crisply tailored Pininfarina-designed bodylines virtually unchanged through the evolutionary 400 and 400i (fuel injected) models of 1976 through 1984, culminating in the 5.0-litre 412 from 1985 to 1989. Over those 17 years, this line was Ferrari's longest-running series and the 412 was the last front-engine Ferrari until the arrival of the 456 in 1992.

Bearing a model designation denoting the swept volume of each of its 12 cylinders, in typical Ferrari fashion, the 412 displaced 4,943 cc and delivered 340 rated horsepower. Either five-speed manual or GM-sourced Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic gearboxes were available. Fully ensconced in luxurious leather upholstery, occupants of the 412 were whisked from rest to 60 mph in under 7.0 seconds, en route to top speeds exceeding the magical 150-mph mark. The UK's Car magazine editors achieved even better performance during a contemporary road test, pushing the 1,884-kilogram 412 through the standing quarter-mile in just 14.6 seconds and attaining 155 mph flat out.

Handsomely finished in its elegant original colors of Prugna with Crema leather, this 5-speed 1987 Ferrari 412 has accumulated just 32,420 original miles at the time of writing. To Ferrari connoisseurs, it marks the best iteration of the long-running series and offers several important enhancements over the earlier models, including dual air conditioning, a higher trunk line providing greater luggage space, a "soft close" boot lid, increased performance from the enlarged 5.0-liter V-12, power-operated seats, rear load levellers, and more. There were only 270 412s built with the 5-speed gearbox and they are certainly the most desirable, as the 3-speed automatic muted performance significantly. The 412 was never imported into the United States, but a few were brought in privately. This example was imported by a local California-based enthusiast and promptly fully certified in accordance with both the U.S. EPA and DOT standards applicable at the time. In addition, he had the car certified for California emissions compliance, and the car still bears its Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) sticker and all smog equipment. This process was expensive and time consuming, but resulted in making the car even rarer, with only a handful of 412 5-speeds legal to drive in California.

The car drives brilliantly and benefits from a recent major service including rebuilding of the fuel distributors, replacement of the A/C compressor, fluid changes, and a full inspection to ensure its performance is proper and to spec. The body is straight and shows no evidence of corrosion or accident damage, and the interior remains original and lovely. A modern CD stereo is fitted and the 412 rides on a set of original-specification Michelin 'TRX' wheels and tires. A voluminous document file accompanies the car with records dating from 1999 documenting long-term single-family ownership. Complete with the original tool case and tools, owner's manual, and a current California smog certificate, this outstanding Ferrari 412 stands ready to deliver an outstanding V-12 Grand Touring experience and marks one of the finest expressions of Pininfarina design.

I would venture to say that it has likely been painted at some point as the side view mirrors would not have been body-color from factory.

Also, looks like the top of the dash has been recovered, but black instead of matching brown leather was used.

Looks like a nice example of a very rare 5 speed CA-legal 412. I hope we get someone here on Fchat claiming it!

This 1987 Ferrari 412 GT was reportedly delivered new to Saudi Arabia before being imported to the US and federalized by JK Technologies of Baltimore, Maryland in 1989. The car is said to have remained in the same family until 2016 and was acquired by the selling dealer around a year ago. It is finished in dark red over beige leather, and power is supplied by a fuel-injected 4.9-liter V12 paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Features include a Becker Grand Prix CD stereo, air conditioning, power-adjustable seats, electric windows, pop-up headlights, and 15” alloy wheels. Maintenance within the last five years has included replacement of the clutch assembly, fuel pump, thermostat, tires, and fuel pressure accumulator. This 412 is being offered by the selling dealer in Huntington Station, New York with a tool kit, partial service records, an owner’s manual, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Florida title.

The Pininfarina-designed bodywork is finished in Prugna dark red, and exterior features include pop-up headlights, front and rear fog lamps, a front lip spoiler, and quad exhaust outlets. Dents in the hood were removed in 1999 and the hood, front bumper, and both front fenders were repainted at that time.

The 15" silver-painted alloy wheels feature Prancing Horse center caps and are mounted with 240/55 Michelin TRX tires that were installed in 2016. A sway bar end link bushing was replaced that same year, and a full-size spare is housed in the trunk. Braking is through discs at all four corners. Blemishes are visible on the wheels.

The 2+2 cabin features beige leather seating surfaces with matching door panels, a brown and black dashboard, and tan carpets. Amenities include air conditioning, a Becker Grand Prix CD stereo, power-adjustable front seats, and electric windows. The amplifier and speakers were replaced in 2020 by Palm Beach Prestige Auto Services of Palm Beach, Florida.

A leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel with a Prancing Horse horn button frames Veglia instrumentation that includes a 200-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. An analog clock is found in the center stack, along with displays for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 34k miles.

The 4.9-liter V12 features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and sends power to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The thermostat and front headers were replaced in July 2020, and additional work that same year included changes of the transmission and differential fluids. Maintenance in 2015 and 2016 included replacement of the fuel pressure accumulator, fuel pump, clutch assembly, and distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs.
