First... I started my 88 328 yesterday and let it idle for approximately 2 minutes, when I backed out of the garage I noticed the brake pedal was very firm in feel and response.
Once I shifted into first and moved forward applying the brake was normal again?

Second... I noticed when I started the car, the red warning light with the battery icon lit up only until I pressed the gas pedal then it went out, and it did this each time I started the car yesterday?

Third... When I shifted into reverse from the first gear position it was a bit of a challenge going into reverse, not a smooth action?

    Your opinions are appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mike

    First off, welcome to FerrariChat.

Two of your issues appear normal to me. One is slightly confusing.

The battery light will remain on until you rev to a certain RPM level, which I cannot recall at this moment. This is normal and happens in all 328's that are operating correctly.

The shifting into reverse requires you push down on the stick shift. On occasion it can require a drop into another gear then into reverse. If this is happening all the time I would have it inspected. The solution may be a change in gear oil, or a shift fork adjustment.

The brake symptom you are describing is not clear to me. I am assuming you are stating that the brake is extremely hard/stiff when first applying the brakes to back up and then becomes more spongy (normal) feeling. Is that accurate and how often do you drive the car?

replace the brake check valve. its in the engine compartment on the left side of the plenum. use a 360 part and get it from Ricambi. I just did this on my 87 328 and my buddies 3.2 Mondial, as our brakes did the same thing when we got our cars.

Select 1st gear and let the clutch out a bit. then with the clutch back in, push DOWN on the reverse lever and select reverse. reverse is hard to select or grinds if the forks are not lined up.

2000 rpm makes the light go out and is normal.

Thank you Both for your insight, and thanks for the welcome. I just purchased the car and spent yesterday washing and today detailing. I plan on enjoying this car.

I will try the suggestions you have offered and am thankful once again for your opinions.

    Regards
    Mike

What does letting the clutch out do? I think putting it in gear to stop all the action in the transmission is all you need. In fact probably all you realy need to do put a little pressure on first gear synchro to stop everything unless you have some clutch drag issue. Press on first to stop the shafts then go to reverse.
