I just saw a video of the pilot's view of the Rim Fire as they make a retardant drop and everyone should see it. It's an NPR Vimeo. Spectacular! NPR video not vimeo.

    Fantastic!

    Anyone know what they're flying?

(There will NEVER be a belly landing when landing that plane. ha.)

Landing gear horn is tied to flap setting. You don't silence the horn because its a bad habit. It's also a good reminder of the flap setting, you don't just want to push in the power and overspeed the flaps.

Thank you, I was thinking that it could be a ground proximity thing. Flaps makes more sense.

I was guessing C-130, from the view out the front.

When the flaps are out more than 70% the gear horn starts going off. Not sure how it is in other aircraft but its usually bad stuff to silence the horn.

Another time it can come into play is if you are dropping paratroopers and one gets hung up. Emergency procedure is to drop flaps to 100% then drop the landing gear to silence the horn. Having the gear down has the added benefit of improving the airflow situation for the poor sucker caught in the door.
