Are the wheels actually chrome or polished aluminum?

Sometimes (lazy) people use hydrochloric acid to clean chrome wheels because it works great and cleans quickly. It's likely they used this. But you have to do it quickly and use lots of water, otherwise I believe it'll stain. And no matter how quickly you rinse, it's just plain bad for the brakes. I haven't heard of the chrome peeling unless it's a poor quality chrome wheel.

If the wheels are uncoated polished aluminum, then they don't even have to use the acid for the wheels to stain. Many wheel cleaners will stain this type of metal. However it's fairly easy to bring them back to life with a good metal polish. If they're really bad, you may want to use the Mother's Mini PowerBall or Flitzz Ball or even a sisal wheel.

I just had my wheels refinished at Wheel Repair Specialists in Santa Ana http://www.wheel-repairs.com/

My wheels have black centers with a 4 inch polished lip. After 29k miles they needed some help. WRS repainted the centers, polished the lips, and clear coated the entire wheel.

First - make sure you're wheels don't have a clearcoat. If it does, you DO NOT want to use Power Metal to polish it. Using the Mother's Powerball Mini is fine - but you'll want to treat the rim just like paint since that's what the clearcoat is. Mothers has a couple of products for random orbital polishers called Power Polish and Power Wax. You could probably use both of those on the clearcoat. I use both productions and my Porter Cable random orbital polisher to polish/wax all my cars.

If your wheel does not have a clearcoat, you can use Mother's Power Metal. It is very effective, but use it very sparingly or, better yet, practice on an aluminum sheet so you can get the feel of how to use the Power Metal with the Powerball Mini.

Secondly - the Powerball Mini should be available from Pep Boys, Kragen or even Walmart. It attaches to your electric drill. Works VERY well - on aluminum bits and for polishing stainless steel sinks (when used in conjunction with Power Metal.)

Son Tran is the best. He fixed my DB9 wheel and my Range Rover wheels in an hour and they look brand new. A real pro.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have seen it happen many times in the past with polished multi piece wheels. I would discourage your from trying to fix it yourself and take it to a pro. I highly recommend Wheel Repair Specialists in Santa Anna.
