I have a manual F430 20 miles that has a whine when decelerating.

I notice it for example in 3rd hear, decelerating (or gently driving with light throttle). Around 4000-3000rpm. There is a light whining noise. It's not a 'heavy' diff whine noise. Quite annoying.

The car has always been maintained and serviced and was recently serviced with all fluids checked/replaced.

Are there any tests or driving methods I can use to confirm if it's ring and pinion ? What would be the best course of action eg obviously check fluid levels, but any other advice?

    Thanks

Drain the gear lube into a clean container and look for particles.

Ok thanks very much for your reply. I'll get that done. If that's all good and there's no excessive wear, would I then look at the setup? Apparently ((from YouTube), there needs to be the correct pressure (?) when setting up a used setup and different pressure setting up a new unit.
If you're tech minded can you assist further please?

The wine could be a number of things.

If you are talking about the crown and pinion generally hey are repaired in pairs, new or used.
Yes the tolerences are differant for new or used.
Quite oftain this is caused more from the bearings within the transmission.

Has it all ways made that noise?
    I assume you mean 20 000 miles

Hi yes meant 20,000 miles. Unsure if it's always done this as I'm the new owner. I will look at the bearings though thanks.

Not familiar with the F4 430. But some Ferrari's have magnetic drain plugs, and any magnetic metal will cling to the plug.

On the off chance this helps any:
This is from an older Ford axle and driveline diagnosis guide. Assuming its only a sound and no leaks or vibrations....some may relate to newer and varied driveline configurations or designs similarly, or it might give you ideas to check.

Description of whine-high pitched noise that changes pitch with speed and torque changes.Road surface may may cause a change in pitch if condition is tire related.

Going with whine for the sound (as opposed to chuckle, chatter, growl, roar, rumble, scraping, whistle, groan)
    Cause/Service Procedure
    Tires/try different road surface
Front wheel bearings/check for damage and replace or set proper rotating torque
Rear wheel bearings-straight roller on shaft/inspect and replace as needed
Engine accessories/systematically check each component in system
Gear set whine/inspect gear set timing
Gear set whine/inspect pinion bearing preload
Gear set whine/inspect differential bearing spread
Gear set whine/inspect for low lube
Gear set whine/inspect for improper pinion shim
Gear set whine/check for abnormal wear pattern and replace

Amazing info thank you very much. Weird thing today - I took the car to be test driven by the F tech. The noise was there on the hour long drive. Car started off cold and was hot when I hit there.
Guess what - the damn noise wasn't there when the tech drove it. GRRRR. He said it wouldn't be heat related, if it was ring-crown-pinion area that the noise would be there regardless of the temperature. But I'll keep at it.

Always check for diff noise with the gearbox preferably in 4th gear (1:1 ratio) this eliminates any transmission related issues. 90% of decel noise in Diffs is from a loose pinion nut. I'm not sure of how the diff is set up in your car but is sounds like maybe it could be a little low in oil volume which could give noise in a particular gear due to load.

Ok sounds good I'll get that looked at this week. Cheers for the 4th gear tip that means I'll have to drive it today again. Oh damn.

I would prefer someone with a 430 answer then. I am not sure if yours is the same.
I own a 355 and it is the same.
    Pretty sure yours is same
Not sure with the e diff cars
