When I was growing up in the 60s, the absolute ultimate was to be an astronaut. Scott Carpenter, and so many other astronauts, were my personal heroes. Glenn, Grissom, Slayton, Schirra, Sheppard, Cooper... they were the stuff of daydreams and inspiration... Astronaut Scott Carpenter dies - CNN.com RIP Scott Carpenter... you were one of the best of the best. Mike
I just heard about this myself. Truly an amazing life. RIP PDG Posted from Ferrarichat.com App for Android
Just heard the news. I saw an interview with Eugene Cernan at the EAA fly-Inn last year and afterwards had a chance to talk one on one with him. These are amazing men.
88 - yikes! Just never thought of these guys as that old. But then John Glenn is 92 so ... What a different era it was back then. We used to listen to space shot updates on the radio while were on ski trips in VT. We even named a dog Apollo.
"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. "Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle, flew; and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God." Godspeed Cdr. Carpenter. We miss you.
Mike, that was absolutely perfect. These were amazing men and National Treasures. I still remember watching Armstrong come down the ladder of the Eagle while holding my model of the LEM. I had the chance to talk with Buzz Aldrin at a dinner. I was in awe. IIRC, Carpenter was involved in the Sea Lab series of experiments after he left NASA. What a loss. RIP You know, I'd bet >70% of the people in this country couldn't name the two astronauts from Apollo 11; and 90% couldn't name one astronaut from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. Beautiful Bob. Thanks.
