My friend was recently ripped off on ebay buying a turbocharger for his car. He won the auction and wired his paypal payment, the seller said he was shipping the item, after a few weeks went by he never received his turbocharger. The seller wouldn't return his emails either. Is there anything that can be done about this through ebay, paypal or any other methods? Anyone have any suggestions on how to pursue this? Thanks for any input

I'd for sure contact ebay and paypal both. If the paypal account is linked to a credit card call the card and ask for a chargeback and explain what happened. They should pull the money back from paypal and paypal from the seller...in theory.

If he paid via Paypal, he only has 30 days to dispute the sale. He can send in a complaint to Paypal, if the seller can't provide proof of both shipment and reciept of the item, Paypal should refund his money. He can always file a complaint through his credit card company if he paid this way. Otherwise, it may come down to sueing him. I don't think that eBay will do anything about it, because they consider themselves a "broker" for the deal and don't assume any liabilty for what happens.

ebay stinks. millions and millions of dollars of fraud is perpetrated via ebay every week and they really don't care. they say they care, but they do little to fix it.

paypal stinks even more. read your paypal agreements in detail. they'll make your hair stand on end. don't use it. definitely don't link it to a bank account.

Make sure to file the PayPal dispute FIRST, before doing a chargeback on the credit card. In this case, the PayPal dispute should be pretty cut and dry since the item was never received. (As an aside, this is why I always pay the extra for signature verification when I ship my eBay stuff as a seller - proof that the item got to its destination.)

Something overlooked by everyone so far, though, is to make sure that your friend leaves NEGATIVE FEEDBACK on eBay to help protect others from being ripped off as well.

Go through eBay's dispute resolution service (SquareTrade I think) and file a complaint within both eBay and PayPal. Look into the credit card company as well. Also, get the seller's phone number from within eBay and try to call the person.

Luckily, I've only been ripped off twice in 5 years or so - nothing as pricey as a turbocharger though. The first time, despite my doing all of the above, I got zip because the guy was running an organized scam and he disappeared off the face of the earth. Nothing ebay can do about it. The second time, PayPal credited my account within a week of my complaint, so at least that time they were able to do something.

Bottom line (I know hindsight is not helpful) is that I will never buy anything expensive off eBay because fraud is running rampant on there and if the seller is a dedicated fraud artist, nothing can be done (most of the time). At least use an escrow account for a pricey item.

I too have been ripped off twice by Ebay, but most of the time transaction have gone smoothly. You have a few choices, yes you can go through PayPal or Ebay and file a complaint, both will end up in you just wasting time.
If you have all the emails that you have sent him, and that he has sent you you should contact your bank ASAP! If your PayPal account is tied in to a credit card they will eventualy credit back the funds, and it will be issued as a credit due to fraud, they will also do the same with your checking account.
PayPal and Ebay are totaly useless when it comes to FRAUD and in the history of commerce there as never been a medium that has screwed over people as much as the internet and as quickly!

I’ve been selling some small items on EBAY recently. I'm not a fan of Paypal due to the fraud issues & massive amounts of horror stories I've heard. I do check feedback of buyers to see of any issues. I'm only having one problem with one buyer that has yet to send a payment or contact me. The customer lives in my area & I have sent out 3 emails regarding the purchase. According to EBAY, I must wait until Friday before I can take a negative action on the buyer. I do suspect that person has been paying with Paypal but not honestly using their card, I've been the only seller asking for a cashiers check. Good luck.

Yea, I read about the whole 30 day paypal thing. The seller apparently stalled the shipping with some bs reasons and by the time my friend realized he got ripped off, 30 days passed. The guy had good ebay feedback up until my friend bought his turbo then we checked his feedback and he had 3 negative comments about people being ripped off all in the same week as my friends incident. He's now selling another item on ebay which is probably another scam. Hopefully this guy will go down in flames.

I've been using Ebay and paypal for quite sometime now and never had any problems but after hearing about what happened to my friend I just can't let this moron get away with it. Thanks for the reply's, i'll keep you updated.

First, post up the ebayer's user name and a link to his auction so no one here gets taken.

Secound, find out how your friend paied for the item and also post up that auction too.

Third, never wait for 30 days to go by with PP.

I like ebay but unlike others, have never been ripped off either.

PayPal works fine, just select payment with a good credit card. If you are a member in good standing with a Major Credit Card Co. you will never have a problem that the card company will not take care of.

With the three negitive feedbacks he has, why not call your local cops and have THEM call him. Sounds like wire fraud to me.

    I don't mess around anymore.

Contact the FBI Internet Fraud Division and see what they can do for you.

Yep. if you have a problem, paypal sucks.

Here's the problem. Buyer pays via palpal, seller doesn't send. Seller closes or restricts his bank/cc account to prevent paypal from reversing funds (yes, you can do that)

The 18 year olld "dispute mediator" at paypal sends you the form letter that they are unable to reverse funds to you, sorry.

Good consumer that you are, you used your Visa to protect your rights, and now demand, and receive, a chargeback through your Visa account rep.

Paypal now will go right to your account and seize any funds there, and will then hit your card AGAIN for any difference. You read that right. If you close your card or otherwise prevent Paypal from debiting you, they post a negative amount on your paypal account, and freeze your paypal account until you cough up the difference. They also submit negative information to 3 credit reporting companies.

This is one of the main points in the large class action lawsuit against paypal at this time. Personally, I believe these actions are unlawful.

I like how there's a convenient "Report Terrorist Activity" link right there at the top...

    Hmm...
