I want to rip a bunch of tv shows that I have on DVD onto an ipod video.

What's the best software for this? is there an "Ipod approved" software? if there is, I cant find it.

there are no 'ipod approved' dvd rippers, because it is technically illegal. however, there are quite a few good ones out there. on the mac, there is a program called 'mac the ripper' that is very good. i don't know the names of windows dvd rippers, but there are plenty of good ones.

It isn't illlegal to rip CD's that you own to ipod, is it? What's the difference? I bought the DVD's, I'm just basically making a personal backup.

If you bought and own the DVD, then it is NOT illegal.

Are you using a mac or windows?

    It's not illegal at all.

    I like to use either
    Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/)
    or
    VisualHub (http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/)

I think both apps should do what you want to from taking a DVD-rom movie to putting it onto your computer in an iPod video format, and then you can use iTunes to put it on your iPod.

I have DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. I don't know who makes them since I did not put them on the machine but they work great. I can decrypt and burn an older dvd in about 11 minutes. For a very large dvd it might take about 20 from putting in the dvd until the final product. I have since installed a second dvd burner so that might shave the 11 minutes down to 6 and the 20 minutes down to 12-13ish minutes.
