As I was reading through the NY FCA forum I came across a recent post concerning a proposal to build an "entertainment park" in Calverton (on LI) that would include a 3.5-mile road course, along with a NASCAR-style oval (among several other entertainment-oriented attractions). Here's the website that discusses the proposal along with a sketch of the proposed layout:

    http://www.topgunse.com/EPCAL/EPCAL.asp

Would be pretty cool to have a track on Long Island again. They also have a proposal to build an entertainment park in Yaphank, but it would only include the oval track.

Anybody have further information on this? It looks like it's active based on the recent press reports listed on the website...

EDIT: Reading more into it, I can't tell if the road course is actually for go-karts instead of cars. There's a website discussing a karting track proposal in Calverton (http://www.f1longisland.com) but I don't know if it's describing the same place or not...

The F1 long island place is not the same and is for Karts only. The Top gun site is for Karts and for sports cars as stated by them. The Yaphank site will include a drag strip as well. There was just another town meeting this past MOnday. I was unable to go but need to find out details.

Just got this email from F1 Karting

I am writing to you for your support. On November 29th the Town of Riverhead will be hosting an important meeting on this project. We will present our project to the board, and the public will be permitted to make comments. The hearing starts at 3:00 pm and will take place at the Town of Riverhead Town Board Room 200, Howell Ave., Riverhead, New York. We encourage you, your family and any others who support this project to attend this meeting.

We understand this is a difficult time of day for people. Should you not be able to attend this important meeting, it is critical that you make your option known to the Town Board and Supervisor. Please take a few minutes and write a letter to the Town Board and Supervisor Cardinale in support of the project. Attached, please find a sample letter. If you are a karting enthusiast, local resident or local business person please express this in your letter. This project will be good for the local economy by providing jobs and tax dollars. It will bring a world class facility to the Town of Riverhead and the project will clean up and eyesore and create a new beautiful facility that fits in perfectly with the Calverton community.

I thank you for your time and consideration. If you can attend the Town Board meeting please call or e-mail us to let us know you are attending and with how many people will be participating. We can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] or call (516) 946-6225.

    Sincerely,

    Marc Leibowitz

A kart track would be cool, but a full-scale on-road course would be even better...

    Especially for my CS. :D

I'd kill for a new drag strip....making the trip to E-Town and Atco sucks with the car.

I actually have a copy of the original proposal from 1998 and two subsequent revisions as recent as 2003. Lots of options for the space. Lots of room to build and run.

The real problem with this proposal is traffic flow. There's not an easy way to move 150,000 people in and out of there in a weekend ... which is what you'd need on the low-end to make the track viable for NASCAR ... which is what you'd need to get to make the project financially viable.

The NASCAR track they are allegedly building on Staten Island is really a better location. Lots of room to move people in and out. Lots of space to build... when they get around to it.

Lots of room in Staten Island to move people in and out???? Getting over the bridges are bad enough on normal Sunday. Add an additional 150,000 people, what a mess! While I would love to see a track being built in the NY metropolitan area, it's never going to happen, not very practical.

From what I heard, this is the project that's going in - approved by the town of Riverhead. I hope they install a tramway from NYC, because there is NO WAY the LIE and Rte 25 can support the additional volume. You thought traffic to the ROE was bad before this......

    There goes the North Fork.

Yep, that looks to be the plan for now. I had been reading about the decision a couple of months ago. It's too bad too, because the only two realistic choices were essentially either the indoor "ski resort" or the track, and the resort won. Only hope now is that the resort deal falls through...

Now going out east will mean farms, vineyards, Montauk, the Hamptons and...skiing.

I doubt a full scale circuit would be built, but it would be a dream. I have no clue why one does not exist in the Tristate area...

    Or does one??

Put it in Putnam county :D
