OK, so admittedly, I'm a transplant, as if those that met me couldn't figure out I'm not originally from Texas. I lived for many years in the NorthEast and drove in Boston and NY City quite a bit. I'm having difficulty figuring out the thought process that takes place here in Texas when driving. Why the "pack mentality"? I actually think NY City drivers are better than DFW driver's... Really not sure what that means...

But the thing that I really can't figure out is the thought process that takes people from point A to point B that I keep seeing over and over. Take today for example. I'm driving home and am on 121. This woman in a Ford Taurus is in the right lane of 3, and I'm in the middle lane of the three. I'm going slightly faster than her. She decides to change lanes, doesn't look (might have used a mirror, can't be sure), no turn signal, just drifts into my lane, completely cutting me off. I was already on the breaks when I saw her start to come over and started breaking hard and got on the horn to alert her that I'm there and she missed me. She continues to changed lanes while then applying her breaks (WTF?) then gets in front of me, throws her hands up in the air as in "disgust" and is tapping her breaks. I'm back under control and she is tossing me the bird and cussing me out. Then down the road, I pass her at the intersection because I'm turning and she is proceeding straight and she is still cussing me out and chucking me the bird.... I've had similar happen before while I've been driving, while friends were driving, while my fiance was driving, and seen it between two other cars....

So my question is .... WTF?!?!?! If I have a rare occasion to not pay attention and not see someone in my blind spot, etc, and cut them off; My first thought is "sh*t, Sorry man, didn't see you". Apparently around here peoples first thoughts are " F U you F'ing b*astard, how F'in dare you drive on my F'in road"... I don't follow the thought process... I screw up... I cause you problems and nearly cause and accident.... I then tell you to go F yourself? Can anyone enlighten me? I've driven on the LIE Too many times and never had this type of behavior... What the hell is wrong with people around here?

Some people drive in poor manner, and has no concerns for others on a road.
I've experienced similar occasion like you few times. Try to ignore those, and just move on. This is a good example where you cannot make everyone happy.

Yeah, I take a deep breathe and try to ignore people like that... But there are so many of them it got me wondering what they actually think since it is the opposite of what I consider a rational response... Oh well...

Problem 1: Driving in Dallas. EVERYTIME I've driven in Dallas, I've been passed by somebody on the shoulder! Apparently, driving 5-10mph over the posted speed limit isn't fast enough. People say traffic in Houston sucks, but at least most of these morons know how to properly operate a vehicle.

Problem 2: Some people are just retards and shouldn't be driving. Example: I was driving home last week on a 2 lane road, and somebody coming the opposite direction decides to bust a u-turn in front of me while I'm coming at them at 60mph! I start slowing down and think to myself "no way they're doing what I think they're doing." Well, they were. As they got half way around (I could and should have t-boned them) I slowed down and got within 10 feet of them while honking my horn. They have the nerve to start pointing and yelling at me and flipping me off. Sorry, I'm not the idiot pulling out infront of people. You obviously didn't see me, so I'm just making it clear to your dumbass that I'm there.

People just don't take responsibility for their mistakes anymore. IMO, if the world continues like it is (i.e. no ass whoopings as kids) then it's only going to get worse.

What a *****! Just wave and smile at them, that seems to piss them off even more and then ends up making you feel happy.

Had a similar, but opposite occurance this morning. There are two turn left lanes out of my neighborhood. I was in the outside lane. After going under the underpass (290) then turning left in the middle lane. I begin to get over to the left so I can get onto 290. A lexus behind and van in front. Blinker is on. More then enough room for me to get inbetween the two. As soon as I'm half way in the lane, the dumb lexus slut proceeds to accelerate and honking her horn/waving her hands around. I was thinking wtf are you doing?

I guess the morons were out today.

I do that many times. Yes, it does piss those types off worse. I try and mind my business around here after seeing too many shootings and such on the news (road rage shootings). Maybe I should start carrying more often... LOL

Reminds me of a guy I saw on the way to work last year. I was on 59 south, and the truck in front of me changed lanes into the lane on our left. There was a guy in a Honda Accord that slammed on his breaks...I mean nose of the car touching the ground slammed...then he shot over onto the left shoulder at no more than a 45 degree angle and barely missed the wall. I laughed my ass off because there was enough room for the truck in front of me and an 18 wheeler and trailer to get over in front of this guy.

Part of the problem in the Lone Star state is that law enforcement rarely enforces the "Use your turn-signal/lane change indicator" laws. Note the high insurance premiums from 'accidents'. Lots o' TX plates in neighboring states on these troglodytes.

Makes you want to hop out at the stop light, reach in the offenders car and break off the turn signal lever and hand it to the driver -- "You obviously don't know how to use it anyway" . . .

    Rude Phux.

When somebody doesn't use a turn signal to turn or change lanes in front of him, he always says "it must have been an option that year."

I'm guilty of not using signals. Too often I've found that using a signal in rush hour traffic just makes people block you out of the open space. No warning, no block!

Tillman, you think DFW folks are bad with that, then go drive in RI. They are by far the worst of all the states I've driven in when it comes to trying to box you out, prevent a pass, etc.

Welcome to Texas. Where I'm right and you're wrong regardless of the circumstances.

I know how you feel. As a transplant back to texas from KC, the drivers here do indeed suck. I've seen more screwed up stuff in the 20-months I've been here than in 10-years living in KC. Just to name a few..

Driving in far right lane on SH-tollway, idiot in pickup cuts across the double/double white line (as in the triangle area with the diagonal stripes!) into the merge lane to pass me on the right, slams on brakes and cuts back in front of the car in front of me. He gained all of 50-feet with his manuever. Bravo.

People entering the freeway, accelerating up the merge lane to get in front of you when there is more than enough space behind you, but only 5-feet b/w you and the car in front of you.

People BACKING UP on the freeway shoulder b/c they missed their exit. GO AROUND IDIOTS!!!!

Turn on blinker to change lanes. Car behind accelerates to cut me off...happens daily (this is why no one signals).

Slowing to make a right turn, car coming in opposite direction suddenly turns in front of me with no signal/warning. Slam on brakes and honk horn. Get flipped off.

Red light runners. I see more in a month than I saw in 10+ year in KC. And I don't mean the light is yellow and turns red. I mean my light is green and the cross traffic is just entering the intersection at a high rate of speed. I never go at a green light w/o looking first. Sometimes I wish I had that old 2-ton Chrysler of my fathers with the huge bumpers.

90% of the offenders in my stories are pick up drivers. I really don't understand what it is about driving a pick up that seems to turn people into complete idiots on the road.

My wife tried to tell me she though people here were more friendly. I asked her to drive to work with me a few times and she'd change her tune.

I think your experience happens to all of us, but don't classify all Texas drivers because of her stupidity. Maybe once every few weeks I will have someone drift over without blinker, 90% of the time they're on a cell phone. This morning I had a Fed Ex van cut me off, but that was OK since he had a blinker. :)

Most annoying and common bad habits I find with DFW area drivers…

    1) When a lane merges (like 3 to 2 lanes) cars run up the half mile of cars bumper to bumper before merging in. They know it merges, what makes them better than everyone else waiting patiently? This is the most frustrating to me because most are doing on purpose, they are blatantly disrespecting everyone patiently waiting, and insult to injury they are taking 5 minutes off their commute and adding a few seconds to yours.

Same thing with onramps I try to merge as early as possible in bumper to bumper. With traffic flowing you need to be going speed of traffic before merging.

    2) When two bumper to bumper lanes merge, like exiting sporting events the proper etiquette is alternating cars. Can't stand people who ride the front bumper to keep anyone from merging or those merging that ride the bumper of someone you rightfully let in. How dumb do you have to be not to understand that alternating is the norm and fairest.

    3) Access road runners. I have a problem with people exciting just to take the next onramp to cut ahead, same issue as with #1. However, for some reason I think OK that if you're going more than one exit on the access road or access road has some stops, then it is OK.

    4) Shoulder passers. Rarely OK at some turns and if you wait until last second.

    5) Someone not letting you in when you have to merge. Like #2 and Tillman's description when someone is just blocking for the hell of it. If I was a semi I would be really pissed off all the time. I'm always the only driver that will let semis merge when they have to. Almost everyone will block them out as they don't want an 18 wheeler in front of them. Traffic is traffic, be patient, being an ass hole is worth another 5 seconds?

    6) Two lane turns when inside car drives wide. People are just idiots, at least 50% of drivers don't know how a two lane turn works. That doesn't surprise me, many people don't know how a 4 way blinking red light works either.

    7) Not using turn signals.

While we're talking about cars, another issue is motorists passing cyclists. Sure, I respect the opinion of many that cyclists don't belong on some roads, however, take it up with your state lawmakers and don't take it out on the cyclist! They have a legal right to be there today, so respect that you're in a 3,000+ lb. vehicle and they're on a 18 lb. bike. If they are breaking the laws, then call the police, don't take it out by buzzing them. Trust me, cops know the bike rules and are more than willing to write tickets to cyclists that break them.

I used to get flipped off and honked at daily on 610 west (@ 45) because I would ride the bumper of the person in front of me to make these people wait a little longer. If you're trying to get in my lane further back, I'll let you in, but not at the last second. Every morning I told myself that HPD has a gold mine there if they just sat a car in the triangle thing where 610 west exits 45 north.
