Road & Track from 1997- How to buy a used Ferrari for under $30k. It was about 308's. It would offend a number owners today. They offered the following advice. Never buy any 208's (no parts availability), don't buy a Euro car (emissions). I kept my R&T collection for many years before deciding I didn't need 20 year magazines laying around.
As I recall, in 1997 you could buy a nice carbureted or injected cars in the low to mid $20's. I often saw 80-82's in the upper teens. QV's in good shape around $35k and 328's in the low $40k range. Glass cars sold at a slight premium usually in the $40k range.

I am the opposite - I didn't need new magazines lying around, lol. I kept all the old ones

 

I've got every R&T 1966-1973. The Golden Age for them I think. I love looking through them from time to time. It was a great enthusiasts magazine back then.

I also kept some of the later issues that had significant articles related to the cars I have owned.

Can't keep'em all!

 

I always liked the Peter Egan stuff.

 

Maybe I didn't state it clearly. I purchased the magazines back in the day (many years of subscriptions) and thru them away a few years ago.

 

I still have the first R&T that I bought in 1956. John & Elaine Bond were the publishers then, and John was a master at explaining how cars worked. I've not found anything to replace that expertise, since.

I am still a magazine person. Back when I was a kid I got everything but around 2010 I had no more room so I spent a Xmas break going thru all of them and throwing out anything that didn't have a Ferrari featured or some other article I just wanted to hand on to.

I am about to do a phase 2 elimination again this Dec.

 

I used to like Car and Driver also when they had Bedard, Yates and Davis. Those days seem to be long gone although I do enjoy the Hagerty Driver's club magazine.

 

That "Buy a Ferrari of under $30K" statement is so misleading they don't tell you that parts, and maintenance is triple that over time, maybe more!!!!

 

$30K in 1997 when the magazine was published is equivalent to $56k today according to the inflation calculator. Lots of people can buy a Ferrari...most can't afford to properly maintain it.

 

As these cars age they require more and more. In the 90's you were looking at belts, fluids, filters and other maintenance stuff maybe other things like shocks. Now at 40 plus years some cars have a lot that is worn out on them and it adds up not to mention body work.
