Roads in Colorado?????????

Guys -

This is also posted under "Cars, Motorcycles, Boats and Planes", but to make sure it's seen...........

I was wondering if I could get some ideas or help with regards to a motorcycle trip I'm taking in June?

The plans have pretty much been set. I'm having my bike shipped out to Las Vegas. I fly in June 1st, which is a Friday, and will be leaving Las Vegas on Saturday morning, June 2nd. I am planning on heading up to Utah, via 15, thru St. George. From there, up to Bryce Canyon, and then West via 12.

After spending two or three days in Utah, I'll be entering Colorado either on 70, 46, or 666.

My question is, if I want to spend three days driving around Colorado, could anyone recommend some scenic roads or routes? I know I want to hit Aspen for a overnight stay. I've heard Estes Park is beautiful too. I'll be leaving from the Denver area when done, with the last push towards home in Minnesota.

I just drove down from Silverthorne this morning at around 7:30am and passed a guy riding a Goldwing near the Eisenhower tunnel! Certainly not the best time of year to be riding two wheels in the high country

 

The Evergreen area is great too, try the road to Mt Evans(go to the top too) if it's open, Squaw Pass is the road up there, it's awesome and not very busy at all.

For 3 days of riding, here's my recommendation:

From Utah, go to Durango and spend a night. Get up early and take US550 north to Ridgeway, then CO62 west to Palcerville, then CO146 south to intersection with US160 where you will go east and return to Durango. This loop is world famous. Time permitting, you can stop in Meas Verde NP. Second day, take US160 east to Southfork and go north on CO149 through Creede and Lake City. Angelo's pasta factory is in Lake City and he says any Ferrari owner eats for free. When you get to Salida, go east on US50 to Poncha Springs, then north on US24 which goes through my town of Buena Vista on the way to intersecting with CO82 which goes over Independence pass to Aspen (a fabulous ride!). For your third day, I would back track over Independence Pass (mountain scenery is completely different coming and going). Take US24 north to CO91 north to I70 east and get off on CO9 north to Kremmling where you take US40 east to Granby and then US34 to Rocky Mountain NP and US36 to Estes Park where you might want to stop. Then take US34 to I25 north to Cheyenne and I80 on your way home.
Afternoon thunderstorms are very common in June and can turn a warm sunny day into a very cold nightmare if you are caught out. Bring appropriate weather gear.

If you come in on 46 you'll have some interesting scenery and empty roads. Between La Sal and Whitewater you're more likely to see a UFO than a cop. Highway 141 is a scenic byway and was rated as one of the top motorcycle roads by some magazine in the not-too-recent past. Gateway Canyons resort is a nice place to stop. Watch for deer around dusk in this area, though. Highway 128 Between Moab and Cisco is awesome as well - it may be my all-time favorite road. It follows the Colorado river through a spectacular narrow canyon until the Dewey bridge, and it twists and turns through some red rock country for a while, and rolling hills after that - lots of fun in a sports car or on a bike. I-70 West of Grand Junction is pretty boring and it's mediocre from there until Glenwood Springs. It's worth stopping in Palisade to tour some of the small wineries in the area. The Northwestern part of Colorado is to be avoided if you're looking for a scenic drive, but you can't go wrong with the rest of the State.
