I cannot fathom the disappointment he has inside for what was imho a poor choice getting in that Rally car so close to the season opener. I truelly envisioned greater things for him in F1 until that fateful day, it saddens me a great deal because I'm a big fan of his.

It is very unfortunate to hear about another setback for him. But I say that toward his personal quality of life, not as a former F1 driver who cannot drive.

We all know the guy loves racing cars (who wouldn't) and was pretty darn good at it before his near-fatal accident. So in that respect it is sad to think that like or not his career was probably finished when he crashed the rally car.

Here is the hard truth that Kubica and his fans will have to face: he will likely never be 100% again. Never as physically able to drive an F1 car at his previous level. Before the accident, he was certainly good. But Vettel, Button, Hamilton, or Alonso good? No if you ask me. Even if he had never been injured, Kubica had always been the spoiler at best, possibly winning a race or two when the conditions were right. So now with this newest injury he will be out of a car for at least 18 months, and not 100% even then when he tries to drive again later this year (at the earliest).

I have mixed feelings on this. I hope he gets healthy enough to test the Ferrari, but my gut says when he actually gets into the car he will be shocked at how difficult it is to drive for him and how far behind Alonso/Massa he is and will probably stay.

If anyone remembers Carl Fogarty, he was the dominant World Superbike rider throughout the late 1990's. Severely injured his shoulder and sat out most of 2000. He thought he was ready and healthy to test the bike at the end of the year, there was a bit of hype and hope from Ducati that the king was back. But when he tried to ride he realized he physically couldn't do it anymore. IIRC, he literally rode the race bike only one afternoon and immediately retired.

I could see the same thing with Kubica.

Beyond the obvious there is the fact that now we'll never know.

I think you are spot on and Fogarty is a perfect example. I do hope that RK can atleast resume his racing career in Touring Cars or possibly in one of the LeMans series, only time will tell.

I have little doubt that Robert will live as large as is physically possible. Much as Clay Regazzoni did. But after F1 everything else is a bit like kissing your sister.

he survived a horrific crash will full use or his limbs in tact. I'd say he's pretty damn lucky! He's made millions in f1, no shame in calling it quits. Was it before his time...probably...but he still has a long healthy life ahead of him.

I thought of that as well. He got very lucky with the devastating Montreal crash only to be seriously injured by a fluke guard rail.

At a press event today Alonso said that Robert is the driver that he fears the most as a competitor.

That's what a good friend says to his fallen comrade to lift his spirits.

Don't believe this to be true for one second.

Alonso biggest competitor is Vettel and he would never acknowledge that publicly.

    All true.
Which is why I cited it without comment.
Says more about Alonso than it does about Robert.
Once the competitive threat is gone there is a camaraderie.

    My thoughts exactly.

I think that Kubica is finished for the sport.

Who says Bernie hasn't got a sense of humour?!.....

I wonder if he'll ever do an autobiography? Should be a great read.

    Cheers,

These cards are a tradition with Bernie. Every year the same artist makes one for him commenting on the biggest "scandal" of the season. Some of them are hilarious, some less.

Bernie sends those to his friends and family and since Benoit is his Backgammon buddy at each GP, he gets one.

It sure would be but i imagine that it would be more an insight into his way of thinking than a historically accurate account.
Besides he'll never get around to write it since he never expects to leave the scene and won't be burning any bridges.
