    Son wants this for Christmas---Do I need to buy a bunch of instruments also or just the game? Not sure what I need to get ....

    I have the band kit and an extra guitar.

    You don't technically need the instruments, as you can do everything on the standard controller, but its virtually impossible to play it like that.

    To really play it, you are going to need atleast one instrument, probably a guitar. If your son has friends over frequently, chances are he wants the whole kit-and-kaboodle.

    You can save yourself some cash and buy the PS2 Rock Band set (microphone, guitar, and drums included) cheaper than the PS3. The instruments work with the PS3. Then go to Game Stop (or any used video game store) and buy a used PS3 Rock Band game (game only) for $14.99 or $19.99 and you're in business. I never thought I would play it, but we play all the time. We even have our family band, The Lambos!

    Without the instruments, the only thing you can do is sing with the microphone.
