I thought for sure he was a goner. Absolutely convinced. When his foot moved (I can't remember if this was commentary, on a forum or who I was watching with), but all I thought was back to Senna's crash, when the last thing we saw of him was tilting his head briefly before collapsing. I thought that foot twitch with Kubica was it.

When news came that he was ok, talking....and hurt his leg (? or whatever they said on live TV at the time), I couldn't believe it. 290kph into a solid concrete wall.

Amazing. And just a bruised ankle.

Such a nice man. I know his F1 career won't go anywhere any longer but I do hope he finds a paying job racing other things.

Robert could still do a very good job driving most racing cars, f.1 is just to extreme for him i fear...but all the respect in the world for having the balls to come back...and, i believe if he was against Stroll he would be ahead...i wasn't much of a fan of Russel, but the kid looks allright now.

If you look at his arm, its barely a functional appendage. I cannot believe a modern F1 driver can drive as well with one arm as with two.

Russell is quick just a quite kid. Big balls indeed on Kubica coming back and not wondering ''what if''. The only what if moment he'll forever have is what if he didn't crash...would he have had a championship by now (ferrari 2012 move). the things that could've been.

    +1

Cars too easy to drive probably.

Robert is very nice man , i concur , was exposed to him a few times back in the day , such a shame but such is life . I do believe the cars are easier to drive in some ways , the level of fitness required is off the charts in my opinion, gone are the days of the chain smoking hard drinking drivers but at the same time , there doesn't seem to be as much in cockpit vibration as in the past and the sequential boxes make shifting a breeze in comparison.

Agreed. Fitness is definitely massively important. I guess the powersteering has made a big difference. Robert couldn't drive these cars without it I'm sure.

So it comes to our initial point: even impaired he was consistently putting 0.5sec-1.0sec into Stroll's butthole. :D

How impaired was Massa after his accident when in his first race after his accident he qualified second and finished second in Bahrain in 2010 despite having to save fuel for the last 20 laps?

In 2017 Lance a rookie finished 3 points behind Massa and Hulkenberg driving the notoriously hard to drive 2017 Williams.

In the interview that Nelson Piquet explained his own problem, he said that after the crash he lost his "vision acuity" and he had to start to look at the end-of-straight signs for braking. He said that it made him at least 0,5 sec slower. Even with it, he was able to become world champion in the same year and would still win a few races later.

Back in 2010 Mass was driving a Ferrari, not a Williams.

Still, we are just speculating that he got impaired based on the difference between his performances before that crash. Even if he didn't get any impairment, he was clearly in the end of his career and still beat Stroll fair and square.

Take Verstappen and Leclerc who were recognized as highly talented still during karting: how do they compare to their team mates? Stroll on the other hand...

 If you take out of the equation the 3rd place in Baku, how would it end up?

Again, we are still waiting you to show us where/when demonstrated any signs of talent.

Also, the fitness test cannot have been very thorough for Kubica to pass.
I also question how he could still qualify for a Superlicense after years of inactivity in motor racing apart from private tests.

It actually is , the cardio shape a driver has to be in these days is unreal , the cars pull 5G’s at times , neck , arms , forearms all have to be in top form . Kubica’s arm is probably somewhat functional otherwise he wouldn’t pass .

Bingo. A one-off finish in a lottery race does not a great race driver make.

I am sure that Kubica did satisfy most of the requirements, but I suspect the examiner was rather lenient regarding Kubica's arm mobility, and his actual dexterity.

Last year when he was tester at Williams, Kubica himself in an interview admited that he was mostly steering with one arm, the other acting as a counterweight.

He added that he had a problem with his crippled hand to operate the dials and buttons on the steering Wheel.

Maybe he got some slack and then maybe he didn’t , pure speculation at this point and irrelevant . I am glad he is back in the show as that is what he wants and too bad his team stinks .

    Massa being KIND to Williams.

If you look at Lance and the team, they have both gone downhill since they booted Massa.

Not to mention... tons of people followed Massa. No one follows Lance. I don't even think Lance has made a tweet in 5 years.

1.6 down on Perez so far. Spend the majority of FP1 getting in the way of just about everyone.

Last (apart from Sainz who set no time due to car issue).

Same in FP2. Maybe he stopped at the Casino to see if he could spin the wheel to win a Mercedes!

Still, benefit of the doubt again...maybe he was testing without a front wing..lets see FP3 and Quali results.

I so hope he isn't there next year; he is beyond useless. Even in the UK the Channel 4 presenters were lambasting him for holding the leaders up in Monaco; and to finish behind Russel pfffff!

(Russel impresses and his positive attitude, despite a poor car, is what Stroll should have exhibited last year; instead of acting like a spoilt brat. That said, cant be that bad a car is he beats Stroll who is driving a top flight mide field car!)
