It is not uncommon for parents to show up in karting and want 'the best' for their kids only to quickly realize that they are playing in an arena where there is no limit to the amount you can spend. As you move up the racing ladder the expenses mount astronomically and the sheer number of people who can keep up the bleeding drops off dramatically.

By any metric, when compared to working people in the real world, the numbers involved are totally insane. When Stroll came along he merely blew out of the water people who were already spending ludicrous amounts of money and this caused resentment.

A hard look in the mirror is required when you are financing something to a level that only a fraction of the population can dream about doing and you feel hard done that someone comes along and makes you look poor. In racing there is very little global perspective ever considered.

Euro did not exist in the 90s - so if this is a kind of conversion it's not easy to figure out what it would be in today's money... except that it would most probably be "a lot".

When you have $2.6B in wealth, you can blow a couple hundred million and hardly miss it.
When you have $2.6M in wealth, you cannot.

According to that guy, you could finance a single-seater season (F. Renault or F3 perhaps) with that budget.

If I take it that 1 Euro was officially worth 6.55957 Francs when the currency changed in France, that represented 1,311 914 Francs.

I think it was a lot of money for a kart team then.

The saying in America back in the day was all it takes to win is cubic inches and cubic money.

No, not the in slightest William. Rosberg and Hamilton did have a special arragement in the form of Team MBM with the sponsorship of AMG and Dino Chiesa as team manager, but Keke involvement ended there. Keke rarely went to the races and didn't interfere on the team. Stroll's approach was something like "I'm paying this thing so I want this and that!!". On F4 he went a step above and decided to buy an ownership slice in Prema.

It was late 90s, early 2000s and the value is not far off. Today it would cost around 300k € per year to race at the best teams (Kart Republic, Tony Kart, etc.).

It is well known that a season in karting in a top team is more expensive than a season in Formula Renault or even F4.

Funny how wealth can drastically change. In the same weekend I met Stroll, I also met another Canadian driver father: Guy Laliberté. Back then Stroll wealth was ~$1.0B and Lalibertè was ~2.0B.

    I know. I was joking . . :)

When I was in Italy in the late '90's they still used Lira. One dollar was approximately 1,000 Lira!

90% of mongols could qualify pole with Racing Point, says an anonymous Dutch F1 driver...

Happiest F1 moment for me this year.

Absolutely unbelievable, Stroll gets his first pole position ever. And it was not an accident, it was sheer brilliance and car control.

I'm so looking forward to 2021: He is going to decimate Vettel.

As Sky mentioned: The first Canadian to take Pole since Villeneuve in the nineties. Think about that! I bet they're celebrating in Montreal today. Vive le Stroll!

A fine performance by Lance today and 100% on merit. He earned that pole and richly deserves it.

Yep, they say that difficult conditions separate the men from the boys, and today Lance proved his critics wrong.

I don't know what tomorrow has in store for him, but today Stroll delivered a masterful performance.

I'm just glad to see that he got his confidence back. Whatever tomorrow brings. And that could be nasty again given more rain. But today belongs to him.
