I was VERY disappointed with the AM team this year. It certainly seems like what you said bad engineering while all the other teams made some impact. To bad but they run up some points picking up when other teams made mistakes.

    Still a horrible year.

Oh that's just plain mean, are you saying that they cannot copy, ehh, "base" their car in the Mercedes? Blimey... how is that going to work out?

    Bump this thiread.

Bahrain 2022 Seb tests positive for COVID. Hulk steps in for Seb. Hulk has been out of F1 for quite awhile AND it's a whole new different car.

This is going to be fun to watch.......to include qualifying and race.

Yep. Big one for Hulk this. Totally different cars, zero miles in them, presumably even sim testing will be virtually zero as no time to go on the sim now because he needs to fly to Bahrain (if he's not already there) and I assume he hasn't really driven it in a sim for any team anyways.

He had it a bit easier in 2020 when he did a few races because he was only out of F1 for half a season at the time and the cars where much more familiar. Of course it was different engines (manufacturer) and car, but still...the concept was more familiar.

This makes a mockery of the role of spare driver.

With the testing restrictions, he isn't allowed to familiarise himself with the car, but expected to take over at any time with limited practise.

Frankly, this could be a recipe for disaster.

The FIA should rewritte that part of the rules, IMO.

I hope that Hulkenberg can step in Vettel shoes and fullfil his role safely.

Driving this new ground effect Aston will be uncharted territory for Hulkenberg.

Aston Martin is definitely on the back foot so early in the season.

    That's what I thought.

The FIA should have something in place for a spare driver that steps in at the last minute.

What about a private session before practice to let himm familiarise with the car and evaluate if he is comfortable with it.

Certainly safer than launching a driver in the unknown in a pack of 20 cars.

This will be a tall task for Hulk. Not only unfamiliar with the new cars but he has been out of F1 for awhile. KMag showed in testing that it's not like riding a bike. A very steep learning curve it will be intriguing to see.

We need to wait what he will do with this car.
Completely new way of driving for him in a short time of habituation.

You're making it sound like AMF1 drew straws and whoever pulled it had to do the driving. Hulk is no amateur. We're talking about how quickly on the pace he'll be, not if he can make it round the track or not.

Kmag didn't drive F1 since 2020, had zero prep and his very first lap in testing was on the pace.

    Calm down.

Point taken, but KMag went for days of testing before entering the first GP.

Hulk will not have that luxury.

It would be tremendously embarrassing for Lance if he's not head and shoulders above the Hulk. 2 races in 2 years...

Lance has no reputation for actual F1 driving. Adept at braking, passing etc. Some capability in the rain. He is old news and well on the way to 'meh' status as an F1 'driver' or tourist. Hulk might not be faster but that would be down to no exposure to this very different car. Overall Aston is not showing itself as a 'champion' team in the making.

It does sound like a micro-managed kingdom of a Billionaire owner based on press of late via Otmar LOL!

It doesn't bode well for Aston, so early in the season.

They may end up as tail-ender this year, or very near it.

    Yes, there is that.

This is why the FIA should make concessions for such cases.
