Bad crash, but not worse than Gorsjean’s or Alonso’s 2016 one where the car practically disintegrated. Good that’s he’s okay.

Helmuth Koinigg. Maybe Senna. Justin Wilson, though was racing Indy Car at the time of death.

    I see your point though.

    Romain Grosjean for sure,
Jules Bianchi maybe but deceleration was so brutal for his brain that I have some doubts on this one..

You are correct. Piquet jr crashed at turn 17 of the then 23 corner circuit.

Elio De Angelis would probably have been saved by the halo, since his car ended upside down - it was not during a race though, but it was in an F1 car on an F1 track.

If i remember correctly Elio was killed by smoke.
Main problem this day was the lack of safety crew to move the car quickly I guess..

Just read the very long Senna book by Rubython. Halo would not have saved Senna, who was killed by the broken neck of the deceleration (maybe HANS might have helped) AND the frontal brain puncture of the suspension, which would have still likely occured with a Halo in place.

Not sure about Senna - he received a wheel on his head (IIRC that's why F1 decided to have the wheels attached by cables, as they are today), the halo might have prevented that.

    He didn't.

The immediate safety changes after his and Wendlinger's accident the following weekend at Monaco were the raised side walls around the cockpit.

I don't think Senna was impacted by a wheel. A suspension part (a bolt perhaps) penetrated his helmet following the car hitting the wall. It seemed to have penetrated his skull through the visor, provoking massive brain damage.

Yes, part of the front suspension went through the visor and caused fatal frontal lobe damage. That aside he also broke his neck and had massive brain injuries in the back. As the doctors said: He suffered three fatal wounds at once. No way that was survivable but no wheel directly involved.

Only shame was the farce that "he was still alive" so they didn't have to cancel the race. After they took him off the machines in the hospital they corrected the time of death back to the time of the accident.

Stroll drove an interesting race in Singapore wearing Alonso's helmet.

True to form he made two blunders by missing the pit lane and later on a turn. Oh well. :)

And the pit screwd him when the rear jack didn't engage properly during the pitstop costing him valuable time in the pits. This was before his 2 blunders and later on a turn.

Not entirely his fault now is it?

It was Alonso's 1st non-scoring race for the whole season. Can't say that about Lance now can we?

Not quite true: He missed the pit entry before that.

It's pointless anyway, the AM was crap this weekend, no points for the team.

Yup. In their defense, his heart was still beating but it was clear that he was pretty much brain dead. To their defense Italian law requires that the person is taken to a hospital as long as there is a pulse, so they did. That was an elegant way to avoid declaring him dead on the spot and thus have to cancel the race.

Regardless, the Italian doctor put the time of death on his certificate as the time of the accident and not of the time when they turned off the machines in the hospital that evening.

I remember Sid Watkins saying that the moment he arrived at the scene of the accident, Senna let out a sigh and from the huge pool of blood and the head injury Sid knew that was it... Gerhard Berger was also at the hospital and allowed in the room and didn't say anything, he knew it was game over as well.

+1 I think that the criticism of Lance in the F1 press might be getting to him.

Previous to this season I felt Lance was a solid mid-field driver. He has gone down in my estimation. He might be now in the bottom two or three. To see what rookies Piastre and Lawson are doing is eye opening. Also Albon has been a revelation. Bottas and Lance probably shouldn’t be in F1. Maybe joined by Tsunoda.
