When I first started college and was still living at home, no job, and more free time than I knew what to do with, I set out to learn two albums on guitar:

    1. '...And Justice For All'

    2. 'Rust In Peace'

In my opinion, they are the pinnacle of guitar playing so far as hard rock/metal is concerned.

I can understand that argument, Christo.

I've never set out to learn those albums beginning to end. Sure I know the riffs and stuff.

    For me it was:

    1. Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
    2. Children of Bodom - all of the albums

If you don't know Children of Bodom, they are a monster of a band. If you are open to screaming (they are a death metal band from Finland), then listen to them.

But as of current for mastering guitar chops...Trivium - The Crusade

They've been compared to Metallica all too often, and for good reason. The Crusade is the Metallica album Metallica forgot to make before they did the Black Album.

In my opinion today's "rock/metal" doesn't even come close to what was around in the era of Metallica, Megadeth, Motley Crue, Van Halen, etc. (basically the 80's).

Nothing beats rocking out to One or Hangar 18 :D

I like Alexi Laiho (sp?) on guitar. He kicks ass. He looks like a chick, but he sure can play. The vocals just turn me off (C.O.B)

Im a huge Metallica fan (can you tell??!) I think their two best albums are Kill Em All and Justice. Totally different, but unreal. Of course Blackened is a great song. FYI--The intro to Blackened is the main riff played backwards, so ive heard.

Marty Friedman on Rust In Peace is amazing. It hurt when he left the band. Now with Dave E (bass) gone--- They just arent the same. Dave Mustaine is just a f'd up individual. Bad drug problems thru the years.

Hes no longer with ESP Guitars. Rumor has it he signed with First Act and is going to announce it at NAMM which starts today, i think.

    KICK HIS ASS, SEA BASS!

I can tell you one thing about his new guitars. It's not First Act.

And if you like Alexi Laiho's playing, but not the vocals...check out Sinergy. It's basically an early CoB with a female vocalist. She has some serious pipes.

Markpdx and I ran into James Hetfield in Monterrey last year during the big car show.

I told him "I love downloading your music from Limewire." He said "screw you" and grabbed a bear bottle to smash over my head.

I am just joking, actually he was a real nice guy.
