I have a friend who is looking to buy a stainless Submariner date. Looks like the going price is approx. $16k+ on sites like Chrono 24? Any idea what the typical wait is these days at the Rolex dealer if no prior purchases? Just trying to help him figure out what options are out there. Thanks in advance for any advice.

A new 41mm Submariner Date has an MSRP of $9,150.00 before taxes. However, most official Rolex dealers don't have them and quote over a year wait time. So, the market for a private sale is indeed in the mid-teens.

I generally sell them for 16k and over. I'm supposed to receive a few in the next few weeks so if your friend wants one for $15,500 I can put him on my list. Most customers have to buy a bit from the ADs before they're offered a Sub. Every now and then I'll hear of someone walking in and getting lucky within a few months but that's maybe 1 out of 50.

So it all comes down to money and time. Does he want to buy a few watches, take a loss and wait 6-12 months and then get the Sub at retail? Or does he want to get it now, not have to deal with other watches and pay over MSRP?

Thanks all for your input, it is very helpful. I will pass this along to my friend. I bought a two tone Sub. 16613 in 2005, at a dealer in the Caribbean for 10%+5% off retail. Had I known where the market would be today my decision then would have been a lot easier and involved less beer.
    Thanks again

I’m interested in a steel Sub or GMT Ii, but willing to wait a few months for something closer to MSRP. Not looking to resell, but as supply catches up to demand I’d have serious buyer’s remorse at 50 percent over list.

I’ve already bought another watch at the local AD but they can’t promise anything.

If you can get any rolex now, whether grey market or AD, i would suggest do it now before the holidays. More people would want a nice gift like a rolex;>
