Does anyone know of a removeable roll bar set up for a Mondial cabriolet? One that won't require the butchering of the interior? New track insurance won't allow my car on the track without a roll bar.

    Any help is appreciated

I have never seen one but I searched for a while...you will probably have to have your local race shop make one. I was thinking that it could be mounted in such a manner that he carpet would cover the mounting positions when it was removed but have never gone that far.

Gentleman here in Ct. had one custom made for something like $500. Should not be hard to do for proper shop as the best roll bars usually are custom made anyway.

    Jet-x,

If you can get the bar I can help you do it. From what I understand about cages you need to prevent push through and pull out of your bar. Thus at a minimum you should have a 4 point bar. Than mean rollover hoop = 2 points to the chasis and then 2 more arms hooking somewhere aft= 4 points. You need to reinforce the floor with large plates like 6x6 1/4" welded to your floor (I can do that for you take 15 mins.) Better yet is to bend this piece so that part is welded to the side chassis rail and the floor. You bolt the cage through this and then use 1/8" plate under the chassis floor to prevent pull out. You try to do the same thing for the rear anchors. You can leave the welded anchors under the carpet and then pull the carpet aside when you want to bolt in the cage. Then remove the cage for street use. Check with Lou Menditto on this list I am not sure how to find him. He has a 3.4 mondial with a cage and he regularly tracks his car. DEfinately get the 4point cage custom made. Get the 4 point made with 1/8" 5x5" plate feet welded on and drilled 4 holes per plate and we can do the rest in my garage. You want your fabricator to use DOM mild steel tube 2" x 0.120" thick. put your helmet on and sit in the car and have the guy make the rollhoop 3" over your head. This would also be a good time to have the fabricator add in a cross bar to your roll hoop just above shoulder height. This will allow you to place harness belts and a proper 5 hole race seat in the future.

Basically, every track has to have its own insurance in the event of an accident (CYA). And one of the riders in the insurance that Buttonwillow and Pahrump have is that no open cars unless they have factory roll over protection or added in. Needless to say, I don't have either.

So it's come down to either I can't run in June, or need to find other options. Maybe I should hook up with you for this task as if I come home with another car, my wife will shoot me!

I have one for my '90 Mondial T cab. Had it custom made by a local shop a few years ago so that I could track the car in the faster run groups. Also, I wanted to track the car at other driver education events besides FCA, but they were already more strict.

Mine is a 4-point roll bar built to Solo I specs. I wanted to convertible to be usable with the bar in place, so we had to pinch the sides in somewhat. I prototyped it in advance with plastic plumbing pipe to make sure everything fit. I also had the rollbar rake back rather than stand vertical as I think that fits better with the style of the car. The rollbar is removable, but requires that metal plates be welded under the car and behind the firewall for secure mounting. It is a two-person job to lift the bar into place without scratching anything. Had to carefully slice the carpeting at the firewall so that it would fall back into place when the rollbar is removed. Almost invisible when removed, as I won Platinum at a national concours a few years ago with the rollbar removed. After a while, however, the carpet has lost some of its stiffness in that area, so it needs some attention.

You can see the roll bar at:

    http://www.employees.org/~lmenditt/Ferrari/lmferrari.htm

Regrets; only a couple. (1) The cross bar connects at the center of the rollbar so it blocks part of my rear view mirror, (2) one of the braces interfers slightly with the folding rear seat.

For those still in this group. Can you share the pics again. I’m interested in adding the reinforcement to improve the cars rigidity against flex and cowl shake.
