OK...so my CEL has been traced to bad roll over valves via smoke test. Vehicle is a 2002 Spider. In reading through several posts it appears there is no alternative other than R/R soft top to get to the valves. Not an inexpensive job. 1) Has anyone found a work around to this (I read the post where one of y'all cut a "hatch")? 2) Is the replacement valve designed to last any longer? 3) I recall that this vintage 360 was subject to a recall on these gizmos - any recourse now 12 years later? 4) Any tips on mitigating the repair cost? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Best, Biil
New parts are a different plastic that "should" last a bit longer. Have you looked right behind the top to see if you have an access panel? If not, you could cut one.. that will save you ALOT of time.. Not sure about the recall. Replacement is basically twist off old one, twist on new. Done. On Spiders access is the problem.
I just went through this on my 04 spider. With the top in the part way position, you can remove the "access" plate but will quickly realize that this plate is for the fuel pump only. If you keep unbolting the conv top container, it will lift slightly but enough to get your hand to the rollover valves. Very tight but now that I have done it, less than 2 hours to remove and replace. It will also be easier to remove the conv top cover. It is just 4 bolts and easy to get out of the way. BTW: mine rollover valve had a crack where the hose connects. I went on and broke it the rest of the way and inserted a metal pipe that was a very tight fit along with some JB weld. All is well. I used a evap testing machine and ultrasonic tester, it was very obvious where the leak was and after the repair, no leak.
Have your read this one. I shows everything you need to know. I had to do it on my 2002 spider also. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/360-430/424761-2002-360-spider-gas-smell.html
Good thread. Here's another helpful link. Despite those saying you can get to the rollover valves without removing the top, doing it makes the job a lot easier. Of course, the downside is that removing the top is hard! Ferrari 360 Spider Roof | Aldous Voice
Thanks guys for all the responses - yes read all the links previously - smmuch I was especially interested in yours re "crafting" a port to get to the valves and I'm asking the folks working on the car for their thoughts on same. Am just trying to get "smart" on this subject and trying to mitigate the completely unplanned expense. Good news is that my clutch wear is only 4% -all the FChat coaching on proper F1 driving has paid off Edit: Some of you may be able to confirm, but IIRC, the "hatch" to access the roll over valves was not implemented until 2003 - and the guys working on the car are unwilling (and I completely understand and respect their position) to go the "make a hatch" route.
There is no "hatch" for access to the rollover valves. The opening is for the fuel pump assembly. I have a 2004 and they are not there. I was able to lift it up high enough to go through the fuel pump opening and access the valves. I figure if you don't remove it, you won't have to put it back.
Have the top taken off and replace all of the roll overs to prevent having to do it again for some time.
Early roll over valves were junk. Repairing them is a band aid. Remove top and replace them all or it will be an ongoing problem.
Yes, agreed. Brian, thank you for jumping in (was kinda hoping you would) this is the definitive push/guidance I needed. I need to just face the mu$ic and do the job correctly
When you say "early" valves were junk, does that mean that my 2004 should have newer better designed valves that shouldn't fail? I hope so.....
The current part number was introduced during production but I am not sure when. Your car may or may not have the late valves. Easy for me to say but don't worry about it unless you have a problem (CEL). If you do I'd replace all 4.
Was it just the plastic polymer that was changed to the new orange-ish color? I presume no functional changes.
The color has changed and so has the shape. Hopefully the plastic is better and less brittle. Also the early ones were never glued together well and on reinstallation the top and bottom would separate. That was only if it wasn't brittle enough to just break. Once the seperation happened you'd never get them to stay together. Your average $3 part sold by Ferrari for $400
I assume that I have the newer ones, since they are orange in color, correct? I'm not too worried about it, as I have a coupe and they are easy to get to if they fail.
I am experiencing the same issue. Bad fuel smell was occurring..especially on the passenger side. With the top 1/2 way, I was able to remove the access panel, but only allows for access to the fuel pump. There is approx. 1 - 1 1/2 TBSPs of fuel sitting on top the the fuel pump (pic attached). Was contemplating tackling this one myself & ordering valves / parts from Ricambi, but unsure if its just the valves....or the pump...or both. Any thoughts on this...or anyone tackled this as well.
