He is admitting that he lied; he isn't using the word, but it's very clear that's what he means. And he's apologising because he is admitting to lying. When he says he's not a liar or a dishonest person he means as a generality - most of us would claim to be honest and not a liar; how many of us have never told a lie?

Fair enough, but I think he could have been more explicit in his explanation.

Back to Ron, this is what James Allen has to say:

I am honestly shocked by the comments made here about Ron Dennis. Like it or not, he has done an amazing amount for Formula One racing and McLaren/Project 4 has done incrediblely well under his watch. He was instrumental in how a modern day formula one team operates and runs. Sure, he has made his share of mistakes but so did Enzo Ferrari. IMHO, Ron Dennis has done just as much and is as important of a figure in today's F1 just as Enzo Ferrari was when he was still alive. I may not be a Ron Dennis fan, simply because he is with McLaren, but I have to respect him for his career achivements.

It is a sad day for McLaren-Project 4 team, and a sad day for the Formula One community.

I'm glad he is gone and it shows that McLaren is truly afraid of being tossed out of the championship.

    Very cool. :)

I agree with you but I am not sure it's necessarily a sad day, because I think Ron is leaving on his own terms, having succeeded well beyond what most men could hope to achieve.

Max doesn't like him... well, he one-upped Max. His driver won the WDC despite Max's best efforts to the contrary. Max comes from "aristocratic" blood and is a laughing stock. Ron is a blue collar guy who became MUCH more wealthy than Max will ever be, and he did it by himself, not from back-room politicking. Winner: Ron Dennis.

Also, he is older, he is recently divorced. Perhaps he realizes there is more to life than F1 and work, perhaps he wants to leave his mark elsewhere other than just F1. He is lucky enough to be able to make that decision. And there is nothing to stop him coming back into the F1 team in the future, if he decides to do so.

Honestly, with a CV like Dennis', Anthony Hamilton's objections are about as relevant as a gnat on the ass of a cow that you pass at 80mph in your convertible on a warm summer Saturday morning (as I heard recently from someone else). In other words, utterly irrelevant.

Ron Dennis has had an amazing career and is one of the great figures in F1 history. A mechanic who made good and other than Frank Williams the last one left of the golden age.
It is a shame that his departure has to come under these circumstances. He has been planning his exit for a while and I don't think that the recent events precipitated his leaving the team.
Malaysia was the first GP that he wasn't at for years. He was watching it on TV at his home so I doubt that he had much to do with the present scandal.
Its no secret that McLaren was unhappy with the direction that the SLR took under Mercedes instruction. The new McLaren road car will be much more of a McLaren design in the spirit of the original F1 and I think Ron has planned to see it into production personally all along. Hence the spinning off of that division into its own entity.
    Godspeed.

Isn't it ironic that the two biggest opponents in F1 in recent years have left the stage rather unceremoniously?

    Nope.

Don't join that band of morons who decry the end of F1 as we know it. They're doing the same "The end is near" song and dance every year.

I'm not doing a Miniver Cheevey on you but I do miss the days when there was more fun associated with it. The drivers are too sanitized by their PR guys and their personal trainers. When Kimi is the "bad boy" of the sport something is very wrong;)

    Totally agreed on that one.

Global corporations, sponsor money, political correctness and "fans" who cry like little girls when a spade is called a spade (remember the uproar when JPM used a 4 letter word in an interview?) are to blame for that.

Ron isn't quitting F1, he's "implementing the optimized rationalization of his management focus to ensure a beneficial organizational outcome for McLaren".

At least they race single seaters. No room for a lawyer out on the track.
IMO the elder Hamilton is in a bit over his head this year and is doing his son no good.

    This year?

That guy was a moron from day one and was harming his boy all the way. That became very apparent in Hungary 07. As pointed out in no uncertain terms in "Business F1".

I agree. Anyone who punts a Porsche Carrera GT into someone's garden shouldn't be managing an F1 career.
