I’m guessing that things were different for 308’s.
As the spoiler was an add-on, special request, or standard - depending on the market - it wouldnt come as a surprise to me, if Ferrari randomly used smooth or textured on some given day. It's not as if everything else on the car is perfectly uniform.
Guys, does anyone have any official document ( period price list, etc.. ) with various spoiler option ? I have ever saw some but if my memorie serve me well, any with smooth, textured choice. If the customers had choice, so there was a list, no ? It seems to me that many cars ( Indeed not all ) from the same original market have same type of roof spoiler. Painted in UK or Germany, Black in US etc.. Does the country importer chose "the" spoiler ? I don't think the factory put this or this one some given day. Why ordered two different parts from the supplier ?
With my 20 year experience with new car prestige sales, most importers head office would work out a standard specification for each model, available equipement options and pricing for the cars sold in their market and or country. Some countries have a higher standard specification, some has a lower specification with more equipment options to purchase at extra cost.
Make sense and especially when the importer is thousand miles and weeks of delivery time from the factory. So what is the number of 328 ordered with options requested by the first owner and how many was sold new "as is" with specification chosen by the importer ? May be that's why many UK 328 are Rosso Corsa / Crema and Rosso carpets, all Aussie without ABS and no GTB, all US with A/C etc... ?
Well I have the original sales order document for my car and the only extra option above the standard specification was a Pioneer CD radio (which is still in the car) but that was dealer fitted. Otherwise things like A/C, roof spoiler in black, no ABS, convex 16" alloys, fabric parcel shelf and targa roof lining, etc was all standard for Australian delivered cars.
Just out of curiosity, how many buyers of new 3x8's actually custom ordered their car as opposed to just picking an available one at the dealer?
I think it depended on the market; most, if not every car in Europe, were ordered specifically by the future owner and tailored to suit, I guess. Such very important amenities like Air Conditioning were an option, for which you had to pay extra; ABS also was an option, and an expensive one. I have the ordering sheet from Ch. Pozzi for my GTB #81085 with the list of options chosen by the future owner. My GTS #80515 was ordered new in Germany and the color combo is rather rare (Metallic Black over Gray leather), and it has the rear parcelshelf in leather (another paying option) so the car was certainly not produced as such at random (= without a specific order). I have the german period price list, on which the spoiler appears as a paying option, with it painted in body color as available at no extra cost. No mention of the coarse or smooth finish. Rgds
