His telemetry engineer said it was due to cold tires.. For around 1km before he crashed, he eased up his pace to give himself a gap. When he attacked again at the corner of the incident, his tire temperature had dropped off causing the high side.
MotoGP official website is reporting that Rossi has undergone a successful surgery to pin the bone. They'll close the wound in a couple days.
Before surgery they were saying four races out, but haven't updated sinc they discovered the extent of his injuries. The wound will not be closed for a couple of days. IMO, he won't ride for the rest of the year. This is a serious injury and he has nothing to gain rushing back. It will be interesting to see how this shakes up the contract negotiations among the top four. Certainly Rossi's bargaining position with Yamaha has not improved, but without the ability to show he is still #1, perhaps he will sign with someone sooner rather than later? You have to wonder though too, if Rossi reaaly was considering hanging it up in a year or two if this could expedite his retirement. Stranger things have happenned.
I would LOVE to see Spies on the factory bike. I'm not a fan of Rossi, but wish him a speedy recovery.
I agree that it would be nice to see Spies with the factory team but I would think from the team's point of view it may be a bit early for him. You never know but they would probably rather have Edwards and his experience.
Just seen the crash...very sad and I hope he'll recover soon, but according to eurosport he'll be out till the end of the season . This will be Lorenzo's season, unless he has a crash as well...
Eurosport must have some kind of time machine or something, considering that I have yet to see any doctors (including "The Doctor"), Fiat Yamaha, or anyone other than Eurosport making any timeline comments other than the "6 weeks" comment by the surgeon. I'd like to know where they came up with "5 months". Interestingly, they don't quote anyone when they make this prognosis... Edit: Ok, I've found the quote where Dr. Buzzi says "the recovery time is 4 to 5 months." I still believe that Vale will be back on the bike much, MUCH sooner than that. We shall see. The best part of all this is Rossi is fine, and in good spirits. His latest comment...
Sure was a violently quick high-side, having watched the replays. I hope he'll be back on his feet and ready for next year....on a Ducati maybe...... Just when you think you have mastered a track, bam it bites back. Rossi was what 6 for 7 of the last races at Mugello? I've heard rumors that the Tech3 Moto2 rider will get a call up, not sure how they'll shuffle the others though.
Yeah, Toseland and Crutchlow are too high up the SBK standings to call one of them up to MotoGP... I'd like to see Tech3 Moto2 rider Yuki Takahashi get that call myself...
When I watched the race on speed they said he would be out roughly 4 races. The first thought I had after wondering if he's ok is what he's going to paint on his helmet. He had his face but then made it a donkey when he made an "ass" of himself during a race. With his outgoing personality I'm sure he'll think of something funny to paint on there. Also, any thoughts on this 2nd Ferrari or Maserati (supported by Ferrari) F1 team with Rossi as a driver next year? We all heard the rumors, Rossi may want to move into something a little safer and I'm sure he'll get calls from the guys at SF. Any thoughts?
I've wagered my avatar for up to two full F1 seasons on whether or not Rossi will be an F1 driver for Ferrari. It ain't gonna happen.
"Valentino Rossi has been told by Ferrari that he can test one of its cars any time he likes during his recovery period if he wants help getting back up to speed. "The Italian is expected to be out of action for several weeks after breaking a leg during a fall in practice for last weekend's MotoGP race at Mugello. Speaking in the wake of the crash, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said that his Italian team will be more than happy to do what it can to help Rossi - with the MotoGP champion having tested several times for the Maranello outfit before. "Everyone at Ferrari is with you at this difficult time," Montezemolo told the official Ferrari website. "We are sure that you will be back on track soon, even stronger than before. "If during your convalescence you feel you would like to do some training on four wheels, then remember that the door to Maranello is always open to you." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84203
It is my understanding that Spies, as a rookie, cannot take the factory ride as stipulated in the latest rules. This would also apply to other rookies, of course.
