When looking at the harmonic balancer.........what direction does the engine rotate....clockwise, or counterclockwise? I don't have anyone to assist me in turning the engine over so I can watch what direction it turns.

When looking at the balancer from the passenger wheel well, it turns clock wise.

    Raise rear wheels.
    Remove right rear tire.
    Replace two of the studs.
    Place transmission in 5th gear.
    Release emergency brake.
Mark a readily seen pulley or belt with white out.
Put a bar over one stud and under the other.
Place foot on bar so wheel turns in forward direction.
Step on bar. If you're a lightweight, bounce on bar a little.
Look back at which way line mark moved.

By the way, it turns clockwise.

walawdog -- You asked a trick question -- the "engine" doesn't rotate ;) Seriously, the crankshaft rotates CW per Sean's description (assuming the US "passenger" = "RH"), but all the cam stuff rotates CCW (viewed from the RH side) so keep that in mind.

F308 MAN -- The harmonic balancer is an additional mass that is connected to the crankshaft by a flexible connection (helps reduce/control unwanted torsional resonances of the crankshaft).

Speaking of the harmonic balancer, has anyone used Nick Forza's balancer? I am thinking about getting one, mostly because the timing marks are indexed on his balancer and the ones on the flywheel are so damn hard to see.

Basically sound/vibration it's a killer in high rpm F1 engines and in these applications its very much unwanted,if you take a look at run of the mill motor car you'll see a damper on the front of the crank pully usually rubber this absorb's the unwanted noise to an acceptable level,
