I had repro parts get soft and sticky previously under the influence of engine temperature and high ambient humidity. Have you tested if there was a spark going through it vertically from the cap contact point to the spring clip inside?
I have been informed this is a known problem, with certain distributor rotor arms arcing from the top metal piece on the rotor, thru the plastic, to the top of the dist shaft. I have ordered another from Ferrari
