I am doing my first oil change myself on my 348 this weekend, but was not sure which motor oil to use. Pretty sure I will be going with synthetic, but I am torn between Royal Purple and Red Line. Royal Purple is a little cheaper than Red Line, but I have not had any experience with either oil. If you guys have any experience or thoughts with either one of these oils, I would appreciate your input.

I've heard good things about Royal Purple but have only used Red Line.

    I like their 5W40.

The naming scheme is supposed to mean "5W" for 5 thickness in Winter and "40" for 40 weight protection in Summer/track heat.

So a 5W40 will not be as thick as a 10W40 when cold (e.g. in Winter).

This means that your startup oil pressure will be lower with 5W40 than with 10W40, and that in turn means less engine wear and less risk of blowing a seal (or oil filter) at startup when cold.

Both 5W40 and 10W40 give the same high heat protection (i.e. the "40" number in the oil label). The only difference in them should be the oil thickness when cold.

PAP, the reason the oil filter is sooo expensive is because they had to paint that little arrow on there to tell you which direction it screws on......guess they think we are morons.......lol

If you take that "Ferrari" print off the oil filter, it would sell for AU$6.50. :p:p:p

Hey Pap, over here (US) 10 liters of Royal Purple 10W40 is about $70, and
the Filter from Ricambi is $41
Sounds like you guys get shafted for anything that moves on wheels over there:(
Also, will you be draining that half a quart of oil that's in your oil cooler, or is that too much trouble?

Screwed alright mate! Anything that is imported, we pay high tax on it. :(:(
I may loosen off the hose into the cooler, as I have the RHR wheel removed at the moment, because I have to refit my a/c hoses. So I will start the car, get it nice and hot. Then dump both drain plugs and then take the hose off that goes into the cooler and drain some more out of the hose/cooler if possible. :):)

Amsoil actually predates Mobil1 as a pure synthetic, to my knowledge..a guy in Austin Texas built an engine for me YEARS ago and was a dealer....

Royal Purple is from Porter Texas PAP...about 30 minutes away from me here...I like it! The local Ford house stocks it and some auto stores are picking it up, also......

55 gallon drums are the way to buy.......;)

While on the topic of oil..... Some "green" enviromentalist stopped me the ofther day and told me that I was killing the planet with a useless car that had no purpose other than my own enjoyment, and how selfish I was... There face turned to horror when I told them it need refined whale oil in the engine also.....

Just remind the hippies that the plastic bottle that holds their designer water is made from the same oil that you burn in your car.

    Plastic = oil
