Is anyone familiar with the product?
Use their oil in some of my cars, I have used it in the Dino and the Boxster. Both are gone now, so it's back to mobil 1 in the new to me 360.
I've been using it in my BB gearbox for 7-8 years...love it. Also, use it in my BMW M3 gearbox...as well as my Subaru gearbox and differential. The BB and the BMW now shift great cold.... The "whine" in the Suby gearbox is gone. Still running Mobil 1 or Castrol TWS in the engines.. Regards, David
Royal Purple is CRAP! I used it twice in my fully race-built 3SGTE and after only 2k mile's it was broken down, I was pissed especially after spending $5K on the rebuild. My friend/mechanic at the dealership confirmed my suspicion's as he said 'Dude that shi!t will ruin your engine"!!! When it come's to hi-po oil I either stick with old reliable Mobil1 full synthetic or Amsoil synthetic.
Which oil? I use Synchromax in the gearbox and max gear in my diff and love both, but I have to use a special racing oil in my crankcase.
If you are interested in oil performace of just about any oil made go to Bobistheoilguy.com and check out the UOA forum. It should answer all your questions on a paticular brand of oil with real world facts not personal opinions. Since I brought up personal opinions I have used Redline products for years and have always been satisfied. Haha
I replaced the crankcase oil in my 308 GTSi toward the end of the summer I bought it. Have no idea what was in it before. It had some intermittant and minor shifting issues before the change, but after putting in Royal Purple, but now shifts like butter, even into second, when cold. It still has an occasional issue getting into reverse, but I am getting some new delrin shifter bushings from a fellow F-Chatter and I hope that will put the "reverse thing" to bed. Good Luck
One of our "Club" members did some extensive testing for Purple Oils some time ago. A nasty engine rebuild after the change certainly led to some more investigating.... For what its worth i think the Redline Shockproof oils are about one of the best out there.
What would replacing the crankcase oil have to do with shifting? Did you mean you replaced the gear oil in the transmission.
DUHHHHH!?!?!?!?!. You are right. I replaced my transmission oil with Royal Purple. I don't use RP in the crankcase. Sorry. Was sound asleep on that one.
The PO of my car put Royal Purple in the tranny and I was having 2nd gear probs esp when cold, I switched to Redline and no probs since, it made a huge difference in my car. Use whatever works best in your car, I guess.
I have used all the gear oils Redline makes at one time or another in probably 20 different cars, 5 of which were Ferraris. The shifting always seem to be better than what was in them in the past, but what I noticed is that the same oil might perform different in one 308 or 348 as compared another 308 or 348(using these 2 as examples) ie; shockproof in 1 308 worked fine but in the other not as good as another type of Redline. Every gearbox appears to react different(hope that made sense). Their 70-90w variants always worked the most consistant.
I am very familiar with Royal Purple. I worked for a team and built engines for NHRA pro stock. We used Royal Purple only!! You only need to watch what type you use and the viscosity. We used 0000w oil, looked like grape kool-aid when pouring it. It contained chlorine molecules that breakdown under heat, but lubricate very well for a short period of time-- replaced the oil every two 1/4 mile runs-- and it was broken down and turned black. For a street engine you need to pick a street version of any oil you want to use, racing oils are designed for short term racing use, because cost/longevity isn't an issue. Also any racing type oil is designed for use with specific bearing clearances in the engine-- Joe Gibbs Racing Oil doesn't even list viscosity, they list their applications according to bearing clearances/intended use. Any quality, well known oil manufacturer's oil will perform fine as long as you use the viscosity recommended by Ferrari- as they're the ones that determined the engine clearances originally.
If you want the BEST oil money can buy, get Redline or Motul fully synthetic, ester based oils. They use ester based oils in airplane engines... http://performancelub.com/Redline%20pricelist.htm
I experienced the same thing in my GT4.I found it leaked more and burnt more oil this is with a recently rebuilt motor.I switched back to Castrol GTX and I am happy with it.
2 years ago NAPA auto parts stop selling it. They sold all the remaining stock for $1.00 a quart. Charles
