Rubber Distributor Boots (Needed?)

    A couple of weeks ago I pulled the dist caps off for a good cleanup. 50% of my time was spent removing and re-installing those darn rubber boots that cover the distributors. I am about to go at it again with a new set of plug wires and was just wondering...."are these boots really necessary"? I can understand taking precautions to keep moisture away, driving in rain if this is an every day driver ect ect..... but I am only a "fair weather" driver when it comes to the Ferrari. Are there any drivers out there who don't have the rubber covers installed? Joe

    Joe they are not strictly 'necessary', yet i would keep them on.

    Since you are a "fair weather" driver (as am I), clean the boots well and put them in a large enough plastic bag to hold but not crush them, throw in some talc and do the "shake n bake" thing. Put the bag on the shelf and save them for car shows or the next owner. This action also lowers blood presure...

    I think they are an abundance of caution. But I still replace them every 3 years.

    Joe, ever since I bought my 308QV 4 1/2 years ago it never had the rubber boot for the dizzy. I drive it all the time even during a pouring rain and NEVER had any problem and never had moisture inside. I think you'll be fine without it.

    However, if you would like to sell your dizzy boot I don't mind buying it from you just for the sake of keeping mine original, thanks.

    I bought a set when someone at the shop mentioned that mine were missing. They are a royal, unholy pain-in-the-azz to install, but did save my bacon when one of my coolant hoses experienced a critical failure and showered my engine with hot coolant upon pressurization. The engine was running, and the geyser was levied against my rear Dizzy cap and cam bank when the hose ruptured.

    They'll go back on, but I found a pair of needle-nose pliers were essential to getting the rubber around the edges of the cap.....several hours of pulling, stretching, sweating and cursing should be budgeted for this pleasant task.....

    Just wait until you have to take the black rubber cover off of the large headlight motor bit that raises/lowers the assembly. Worst... nightmare... ever!

    Naaaaa...Just mist the area where the ignition wires pull thru...and do the same for the inside of the distributor boot with CRC Silicone spray. The boot will "fall on", without the use of tools or newly developed Italian curses! LOL!

    A handmade tool from 1/8" aluminum rod, bent into a Tee handle on one end, and a hook on the other helps quite a bit to coax the edge of the boot out from its wanting to roll over on teh bottom where you can't easily get to it.

    I made a similar tool for carb adjustment, that is essentially an 18" long Tee handle screwdriver.

    Next time I change my wires both sets of dizzy and coil covers are gone. I am a fair weather driver as well.

    I am under the firm belief that Ferrari only used to them to up-charge any ignition work by an extra hour of labor ;-)...what a pita

    I've got an extra set of coil boots. Let me know if you want 'em I'll give 'em to you cheap.

    As for the dist boots, I don't have that hard a time but they can be a pain!

    In the 11 years I have owned my 77 they and the coil boots have never been on. Only got caught 2 times in the rain and never had a problem.

    Mine were tough to get off, very stiff and one was cracked but in place. I ordered two new ones from GT i believe, price doesn't register as I was buying everything I needed for the service. I put them on dry, if I had to do it again I'd use the silicone. Not too bad.
