Having sold 3 NSX's, I know how frustrating it can be to get serious buyers. There are many tire kickers and people just looking for a joy ride. However, I've never been rude to anyone inquiring about the cars. I treated each person as if they were going to buy the car.

I often run into Ferrari ads that rub me the wrong way. For instance:
"2000 FERRARI 360 MODENA F1 40k Miles, Red with black leather. Personal Car, well taken care of Clean Title. CASH ONLY! no checks! If you dont have the funds dont email/call me. EMAIL, best contact! i WILL NOT ship the car anywhere, you must see it buy it, and take care of the shipping yourself. Dont waste my time if your under 25 dont bother emailing me. Pictures comeing soon. NOT a KIT CAR, the real thing."

I realize the seller is just being blunt and to the point. But the words just have an air of pompousness to them.... enough so that I won't be calling him.

When trying to sell a F-car w/ 40k miles........the seller should be posting the following ad:

PLEEEEEEEESE HELP ME!! I am trying to sell a 'white elephant' car with 40k miles. I will kiss your azz if you consider buying my car.

BTW, NSXNICK - why are you even looking at a 360 when you're unsure about a 355 (from your other post)??????

Therefore the phrasing of the ad saves you and the seller time and effort; that seems OK to me.

Welcome to the world of self absorbed people, bro.......

I think it was Peter Egan and R&T that did a hilarious column on 'decoding' certain commonly used classified ad phrases..

The newer car owners are obviously facing an unpleasant fact of severe depreciation, and as that ad mentions, the market is real polluted with young kids. Although, as you realistically state, they may have just sent their parents to the morgue, and are real world buyers!

It's a strange world, and even stranger around these cars!!

Both my Fcar purchases have been BIG adventures...enjoy!!!

I've seen ads very similar in style to that even for a 308. There was a particular ad in a local online classified (in NorCal, mind you), for a car that was in SoCal. The seller more or less invited you to kiss his a.s.s., come with cash, and don't ask any questions. Should you have any questions about the history of the car at all, want to do a PPI, have a testdrive, get it Smog'd (this was a carb'd 308, mind you), etc., this car wasn't for you.

Personally, I hope he gets stuck with the car forever...nobody deserves to be treated like that, especially if you've never even MET the person!

From the sports world, that would eliminate LeBron James and Maria Sharapova (to name just two), who can probably afford to buy about any Ferrari ever made.

I'm not going to even start listing the entertainers ...

I think the ad is a little over the top, but personally, having had bad experiences with scammers and tire kickers on the internet, I really can't blame the guy. There are lots of folks out there looking to work a scam -- "Oh here's my certified check drawn on my bank in Botswana for $5,000 more than what you're asking. Please give the $5000 to the person who will come to pick the car up." Then you're out your car and $5000 when 3 or 4 weeks later you find out the "certified" check is no good.

If a perfect world, people wouldn't have to worry about those things. In today's internet world, it's part of the reality. I guess his ad is just an over-reaction to all the crap that goes on out there.

funny how bugets have a way of slowly creeping up. If a perfect '99 or '00 360 shows up at a bargain price, I would seriously consider it over a 355.

I had a guy with a 88 Mondial with 8K miles on it refuse to email me a digital pic. He said I should know what a Mondial with only 8K miles should look like. I politely told him to f**k himself

Does the seller have any idea how hard it would be to aquire $150,000 in "cash"? You'd certainly have to order it from the bank weeks in advance. IRS red flags would pop up everywhere.

Its reasonable to require proof of funds prior to allowing a stranger drive your car, but why post an ad that no one can qualify as a buyer?

    Instead of:

2000 FERRARI 360 MODENA F1 40k Miles, Red with black leather. NOT a KIT CAR, the real thing.

    How about:

2000 FERRARI 360 MODENA F1 40k Miles, Red with black leather. Personal Car, well taken care of Clean Title. I am unable to ship to this item, nor am I comfortable with dealing with a third party. Local pick up by principles only. Due to the rash of fake certified checks, I will accompany you to your local bank to witness the production of payment check. Proof of adequate funds required prior to test drives. Serious inquires only please.

I think a good way to establish right off the bat that you are a potential buyer is to ask/arrange a PPI, especially if you are not able to see the car in person.
A seller who sees that you're willing to spend 300-500 just for the inspection will know that you're not kicking the tires.
I did this recently with the TR; didn't even see the car until I came to sign the papers.

    Yeah this is rude.

I've had good luck selling cars (Porsche, BMW, Benz - not a Ferrari yet) through honest ads, explaining that a PPI is welcome at the buyer's expense and that test drives are available with a suitable deposit (cashiers check made out to me) - usually somewhat related to the price of a clutch. I ask for a drivers license and proof of insurance as well. (Porsche was a bigger deal - most people aren't going to make the effort of showing up just to test drive a BMW 3 if they're not serious...)

What I've found is that if you describe the car knowledgeably, and clearly express your predicament regarding the number of people who aren't serious buyers and just want to joyride, then you can screen prospective buyers better.

(And 40K miles on a 2000 360? Good God, man... it's not a museum piece.)

never judge wealth by one's age.
in late 80's a friend of mine wanted to by a 500E.
it was in the tune of 80k or so maybe a tad more, can't remember.
we were in high school then, before dot com era
the sales guy was RUDE to say the least.
told him for cash $xxx dollars, you can have it.
we left the shop, we went back, he opened two very large brief cases, ok suit cases, of at least $80k or whatever the msrp was in CASH, not cashiers chk, but cash in $20 dollar denominations. forced them to count the ash and we drove away in the 500E. you will not believe how far down the jaw of the sales guy dropped ;-)

the buyer may be young, but never underestimate them....
