They not only sounded good, they felt good. I watched 24 sessions live trackside in that era, over 30 hours of being within 25 feet of those cars and those turbo engines shook the ground and had a large explosion at gear shift.

It's tough for younger people like yourself to imagine things in the past, especially technical things, being better than now because of the march of computer technology improving constantly but the tracks and engines were better in the mid-80's. As far as fastest -- lap times have a lot to do with the much faster shifting times now vs. then saving a couple seconds and brakes even better now too. In the 1 spot we can compare, start finish line of monza there is roughly a 10 mph difference I think you can attribute a lot of that to the gearbox 6 speed manual vs. 7 speed semiauto that extra gear giving a higher top end and the seconds saved in shifting helping on the lap times. not to mention aero.

    300hp is a lot.

Interesting, Mercedes are getting nerveous of the knowledge that Honda may
acquire through McLaren and they are going to try to block that... If that is going to
hamper McLaren efforts for next year, this could lead to switching sooner rather than
    waiting until 2015.

Honda would rather work with them from 2014 instead of say, Marusia.

In other news Vodaphone is leaving McLaren at the end of year, so next year may
have a car with completely different looks.

So did the V10s, particularly the TC cars. You could feel the gearshifts in your chest.

All true, but the fact remains a turbo era car would be destroyed around a track by a V10 era car. I agree that the tracks were better in the 80s, but not the engines. IMO.

Why, did a Honda V-6 Turbo do something great with McLaren in the past? :D

    +1

    Hopefully!

Can't also help thinking if they come back Toyota will too. In the latter case, possibly as early as next year.

As long as they stick with what we must now refer to as 'powertrains', they'll do fine. ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

+1 would be good to see them back.

Q then becomes; '14 or 15'? I guess '15 with Mclaren, but will they try and do something "lower profile" for next season?

Sure would get the naysayers to STFU if they (& Toyota, hopefully) return....... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Why? We're already losing Cosworth. Even if Honda comes back, we've broken even. Big deal.

And by the BBC: BBC Sport - Formula 1: Honda to return in 2015 as McLaren engine supplier

Nah, I think Hamilton will stick with Mercedes for the full duration of his contract. After that, well, I think it'll depend on whether he has been in championship contention or not as to whether he stays.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Such awesome news...maybe we'll even see them revert to their old livery? Unlikely, but I can hope.

^ that's what I am hoping. Without a decent driver though it will be for naught. Perez is a joke and Button while I love the guy just isn't a #1 driver anymore.

As already noted, Honda, today, is a much bigger "name" than Cosworth. I'm pretty sure I know which the "powers" would rather have.

Hopefully, Toyota will also throw their hat in and we're ahead of the game by one *major* player in "advanced powertrains".

Remains to be seen of course, but I reckon others may be looking too. OK, we know the whole "green" thing is BS, but that's the way they're spinning it and if it gets more involved, so much the better.

    Cheers,
    Ian
