I would not like to be on a plane landing at any of these runways. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Steve, i think the 1st pic, there's a place in Malaysia where the airport is actually like that. 1 error, you'll be in the sea. and that place is called Langkawi. one of the top tourist attraction in Malaysia.
Depends on what kind of airplane you're in. The second pic I think is key west. A little Cessna or a Piper Cub could make those no sweat. RMX
I've flown my plane into airports that were at the top of mesas (e.g. Sedona AZ below) and shorter runways (2000'). If you don't like what's going on, you just go-around and set up for a better approach. There's really no difference between a runway with air off the ends, water off the ends or fencing off the ends. You don't want to hit any of them. The real problem are the "one-way" or "no go-around" airports. Not many, but there are some in mountainous areas like Utah. Those airports you MUST get it right because you don't get a second chance; if you try a go-around, the typical situation is that there is terrain rising faster than you can climb and you're boxed in. P.S. The third pic is a taxiway. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That last pic, is that the James Bond Goldeneye runway on that opening scene? _____________________________ Allied Signal Bendix - Best in Brakes
I don't know where the 2nd is but it is not Key West. Third one looks like a taxi way that wouldn't be to scary.
Sedona, thats a nice airport. Im headed there on tomarrow or wensday. Landing on it is tons of fun. I think that Catalina Airport is much more risky of a landing that Sedona.
My buddy flew me in and out of this one--definitely an adventure. http://www.paulnoll.com/Oregon/Fly/Catalina-final.html
the landing strip in st barts is a real challenge. one afternoon i watched as a fellow made three attempts before giving up and flying away.
What was that story about the SW Airlines plane in LA? They were using the 737-200 at that time I believe (orange livery, not blue). Why was there a gas station right at the end of the runway?
That was Burbank Airport and the gas station was on the other side of the airport fence and across a bordering street. Burbank has one of the shortest runways that still handles commercial jets on a daily basis. When pilots touch down at Burbank, they usually are on the thrust reversers as fast as they can. There were reports that this aircraft touched down too long or there may have been water on the runway. That was around 2000, it looks like that gas station is now gone. Yes, didn't make much sense to put a gas station there in case something like this happened. Check out those low gas prices. Especially out in Cali. Edit: Chicago-Midway was a very short runway, too. We took Southwest and we were so close to the neighborhoods underneath.
