So..... I wanted to drive to the SR, but had this little problem with the inspection being out. So I had it checked, and it failed emissions. Quite a bit of diagnostics points to the fuel distributor as the culprit. It's running fine, just too rich. There's not really a way to get it fixed before I would have to leave. What do you all think the odds are of getting to the NM border (and back) without being harrassed by the local law enforcement in Hicksville, West Texas?
Here is my best estimate at the statistical odds at freeway speeds. Over 100 mph = 99.9% 70 - 100mph = 75% 40 - 70 mph = 30% under 40mph = 75% Why dont we start a betting pool and split the pot with Tillman to help pay the ticket.
I think I managed to go 18 months w/ expired inspection, living in Lubbock and travelling to Dallas a several times a year. Of course, I was not driving a Ferrari. Here's my suggestion: If you get pulled over, tell the officer that you went to get your car inspected right before you left, but the horn did not pass inspection because the techs thought it sounded broken. You would like to get it fixed, but the part is hard to find and had to be ordered from Maranello. Offer to demonstrate the horn. If the officer doesn't smile, or laugh out loud when he hears it, then my advice was worth what you paid for it.
Tillman - even at night in the small towns and adhearing to the posted speed limit, the dip **** cops will say that there's something wrong with your lights and give you a ticket. Great source of revenue for the small towns - especially for "Joe Bob" to snag a go fast "foren car". On a funny note, I got stopped in Calvert enroute the Vet School late one night 'cuz I forgot to take off cruise control. He asked if I was in a hurry, yep I was - on emergency run to the Vet School with a newborn sick donkey baby who was on the seat. I advised that she was wearing a seat belt - he looked in the truck, stammered and studdered and said please be careful ma'am. Carol
I wouldn't sweat it T-man, I know a guy that has 2 cars with expired stickers. One of them expired last August. He drives it every day. To work. Down 190 to Irving, 23 miles one way. And he has a shorted out brake light that hasn't worked for over a month. He's either lazy or busy, I'll have to ask my wife what she thinks.
Just -where- in NM are you headed? I presume you are out of Dallas?? Depending upon where you wanna go, might not be too bad, might have itinerary/suggestions for you...
Just kidding. Go for it. I drove my 550 for a month without a sticker waiting for my new windshield. Drove by dozens of cops. My advice - good radar detector and drive during the day - when you can see the police. Not at night, when they can sit on your ass for 5 miles without you knowing it. I feel going over a hundred, on a concrete divided highway, assures you only have to watch in front of you in your lane. With a radar detector and good eyesite (and daylight), you will be in NM in a couple of hours. No problem. But if you get caught, we never had this conversation. You understand.
GO FOR IT, Tillman. No guts-no glory. I know a guy who drove in Dallas for 7 years with an expired sticker, and his car was very noticeable. I suspect if you just keep your cool there will be no problem. Most of the police are looking for seat belt violations and speeders out on the road anyhow. Ask Dave M. he will verify that.
I decided to fly after all, save some vacation days for later. Thanks for all the tips and leads. Now's not too early to plan for the SR 2006, anyone want to caravan in the Fcars?
