    Hey gents,

Am in the middle of planning my yearly summer adventure, er, vacation and I'm considering doing this.

Has anyone here done it before, and if so, can you comment on the overall experience? Good value? Would you recommend it and do it again?

    Thanks

I have never had the opportunity to do something like this but if I could ,I would do it in a flash. There are other but smaller jets in which one can ride and maybe you could investigate that, too. The only other thing that I would really like to do is a cat shot and carrier landing or a demo flight with a Thunderbird. Hell, I would be happy to go on a Tiger Cruise so I could watch and listen. Born too soon.

I have a good friend who did it. There were 14 guys in his group including 3 ex- military pilots and a number of current pilots. All 14 puked. My friend said the Russian pilots make dang sure everyone pukes. They get a big kick out of it.

If your not acclimated to it frequently, 5 minutes of 4 - 8 G means your gonna puke.

A friend took me flying in his Nanchang a few years back. He really took it very easy.... very easy....I almost puked and felt queasy all day.

haha...I was wondering about that. If ex-military pilots puked, I'm sure I wouldn't stand a chance. Still might be worth it though... However, I think I'm leaning to going for one of the F1 driving experiences in Europe this summer. Not sure yet.

I have been up to 4.5G-5.0G riding with an aerobatic pilot practicing for his airshow routine. I can't recall how long we were at it but if one knows what is coming and applies a strenuous tension in the abdominal muscles and everything else I think that he can avoid the expulsion of his stomach contents. Do the Russian pilots wear G-Suits? If they do, they have a great advantage over their passengers. Eight G is a HUGE LOAD for any length of time but if your standing, 1.5 to 2.0 will put you on the deck if you don't lock your knees and hold on to something.

Thanks for the feedback. For the program I'm looking at both you and the pilot wear G-suits.

Good call planning it for the summer!

If I had $15k burning a hole in my pocket I'd be there right now. After a couple months of serious swimming/lifting/stretching, and taking in every roller coaster in my area.

I know you're kidding, but in other threads you've bragged about living in the golden age of aviation, when avgas was cheap and women wore garters. You can't have it both ways Mr. Parks :)

Good stuff, thanks. I've got a ex-military Russian friend here in Singapore that now works in Oil & Gas, so he's back and forth there all the time. He's dropping in on his next trip home and trying to negotiate a 'local' 2-for-1 deal for us this summer. He knows their costs are really high though so he's not sure how far he'll get them down.

Kidding about what? I really would like to take a ride with a T-Bird and a carrier jet but I have a few repairs that wouldn't be as enthusiastic as I am to take a high G ride. Bragging about the Golden Age? Didn't mean to sound like bragging, I was simply recounting what it was like when I was a bit younger. Never met a girl who wore garters unless I was 2 years old and didn't notice what they wore in 1928 and I think that they did wear garters then. I have a receipt for fuel that was 65 cents the gallon and that was in 1970. I have some fun memories from the past and some great dreams in the present and I hope that you have the same when you are 86.

I wonder why at the end he says he wouldn't do it again though? Maybe the physical stress due to them forgetting to connect the hydraulics(!!!) for the G-suit was too much for him to take?

May I recommend promethazine? I used to take it and ride along with my acro instructor to help build up my tolerance. It works wonders, but you will be ready for bed after the ride. :)

You know, it's rarely the positive G's that get me. The negative G's...watch out, I will become a human spigot. Of course, I don't have as much acclimation to them.

Bob - meant kidding about being "born too soon". Just thought it was funny to hear you say that, but guess it's not.
I very much enjoy reading your posts about the "golden age" of aviation, and do hope that I'm still alive and kicking at 86!
    best regards,
    Kurt

a G suit is manditory, for personal safety... even with a modest takeoff and maneuvers there are positive G loads on the body... without a G suit, first event in G force overload is passing out, continued G force overload can lead to other issues that could be more serious and do damage... ( one can pass out with a g suit if the body's limits are exceeded )... there should be a period of instruction on how to deal with G forces before each flight...flying a fighter aircraft is a lot of fun, any fighter aircraft should offer similar results, riding in a MIG 29 only adds to the conversation about the experience

Thanks, Kurt. No offense taken about my senile wishes. My wife keeps telling me that I'm nuts for wanting to hang glide and fly in the little oil burners. I do wish that I was born in the 40's but then, I wouldn't change anything either.

heh make them puke. Current Russian MiG-29's with upgraded engines are in the same class as the Bug (F-18 Hornet) and just as slippery in the air.
