I have rusty engine mounts and they irritate me. My understanding is that there is no magic about them, they are simply bits of metal that are bolted to the cars frame and the engine sits on them. Mister 308's video shows him (eventually... about 2/3 of the way in) simply sanding them back to bare metal and painting them.

I'm happy to do some sanding and painting... but getting them out looks interesting. Is it possible to jack the engine up from underneath so it clears the mounts, allowing them to be removed. Or is this something that can only be done when the engine is out of the car?

They can be removed with the engine in with a floor jack to help move the engine a bit. I might only do one at a time though.

Technically they're isolation dampers. There's a spring and stainless steel wadding/plug stuffed in there. Rubber boot rounds it out to attempt some weather proofing.

If they're rusty crusty outside... Then they're also like that inside. You could drill out the rivits and do a full overhaul. Just make sure you've got them clamped together before doing that.

As noted there is "Majic" in them!

The other thing to know is that they are shimmed, and you need to note the stack as you take them out, to orient your enegine properly in reinstall.

I think they wear out and can cause shifting issues.
There was a big thread once on modofying Summit Racing SOLID mounts from the Mustang, to fit our cars.

Makes your butt tingle I would imagine.
Ours are in fact "isolators", by design..

Thanks all, very helpful, especially re the springs, shimming & rubber bits. I think mine will need to be fully dismantled, clamping them together is an excellent, injury saving tip!
I had assumed that there was some sort of damping involved but Mister308 neglected to show any of that.

Removing them one at a time should ensure that I put them back as they came out.
Hopefully, a job for this winter but I've got a fistful of other stuff to sort out first!

My God, just replace all of them, its that simple. I did on my 328, and boy did it make a difference in the shifting and the handling, do your car a favor and just replace them, they are inexpensive to say the least. Why pray tell would you even bother trying to fix that rusted out **** in the picture ? Christ its a ****ing Ferrari , and while your in there replace all the other other rusted out **** as well.

Unless there are factory correct-spec rebuild parts available - the spring, the rubber section, the spacer - I agree totally with Gino; buy new mounts. Heck, even if the component parts are available, I'd buy new ones anyway! ;)

If I'm only going to extract one at a time, I can pull the first one apart and make a decision.

Rust on motor mounts???!!!??? Gawd, my leaky engine provides its own rust proofing.

I was thinking the same thing. There's nothing rusty around or under my engine. Just a thin coat of oil, with road dust stuck to it. Now, it's possible that the oil isn't the greatest thing for the rubber parts. I don't see how anyone can enjoy a 308 and worry about oil leaks at the same time.
