I went on an S-Class drive day to the Barossa today, courtesy of a local Benz dealer. We had a couple of S350s and a SWB S500 and a LWB S500.

Nicely finished, quiet, well appointed, but not as smooth riding or as poised on the road as I expected. I'd like to try an AMG but I think the S-Class is a size too big for our roads. When I got back in my wife's E500 wagon at the end of the day, it felt quicker and more responsive than the cars I drove today.

Still, a nice day in the country. Great roads but better suited to a sportier car.

We stopped at Cudlee Creek for coffee.

A nice way to spend a Thursday mate. :) None of them Mercs appeal to me sorry. You should have had your cook putting along behind your group in the SE, then on the way home, jump in and blast that bad boy G along the country side. :D

Yeah, the thought did occur to me that I was in the wrong car all day, especially on some favourite roads. Still, it was a pleasant cruise with some fun people.

Did all the cars have the airmatic suspension?

Yep. Standard fitment on S-Class. The airmatic on the E500 seems to give a better ride. I suspect they were running track pressures in the cars today as they were quite knobbly. One car was running 20" wheels which didn't help - they looked nice though.

Did u try and drive with that new radar system ? or is it for night driving only? Also did you try that auto-braking system? Do you feel confident that it would stop in time?

Night vision only works at night (or in a tunnel apparently). I can't see how it is useful though. It shows an image in the speedo areas, not in HUD where it might be handy.

I don't know about the brakes. They felt regular. Sadly, we weren't going fast enough to really test the cars.

    Hey Mr Dee Jay....
    A 7 speed auto?? Amazing :)

I know the 5 speeder in the Magna is handy, although I think the ratios arent quite matching the engine... (with the sequential shift)

The 7 speed isn't that new. Our 18mth old E500 has it.

Of course, some of us here are old enough to remember 2 speed autos.... :)

The good old days. :) A mate here has a Chev Impala Pillar-less with a 454 big block. He has won a few burnout comps here with it. That big block rattles your fillings out when he fires it up at idle! :p

I asked my mate Vince today. It is a 1966 Impala Pillar-less. Has fitted a 454 big block. It was orignally a 427. He spent $9K freshening up the engine. Has a highly modified turbo 400 auto. LSD 9 inch diff. He has 4 inch collectors coming out of the extractors into twin 4 inch exhaust pipes, with Genie mufflers. He recently re-bushed the front end. The car needs paint and is an ugly light green/aqua colour with a white vinyl roof. OHOS! :)

Be great low rider ,good look the 66 car flush rear lights must be a US built car as local and Candian cars were small block 283s or 327.Like the look of the 348 thin on the ground is it good to drive.
