My '66 E-Type is crying for a brake upgrade - I was thinking of the whole Wilwood caliper / slotted, vented rotor route. Anyone have experience and recommendations? I am on a major budget - so I don't want to go nuts. That being said, the OEM brakes leave a lot to be desired and I'd hate to see my car a victim of some wayward driver cutting me off or a deer fly by.
Jaguar brakes aren't like big Brembos on a race car but if their set up right they will stop the car just fine. You were having trouble before, If they're not doing their job I'd suggest that something isn't right. A few things to check: Air in the system (including the booster). Vacuum check valve/reservoir hooked up backwards. Flexible brake hose(s) internally swelled shut (common problem with old hoses). Glazed pads. I'd make sure what you have is put together right before you spend money on something else. Most of this stuff doesn't cost much to check/fix.
I am still thinking there'e air in the system - not sure. Feel is what I'd call "spongy". I know this much, they do grab - I nearly spun the car in a mild panic stop (although to be fair, I have Michelin Red Line tires, and I was told they aren't all that great).
I agree with 2NA. The E-Type is a very well behaved and well balanced car if everything is correct. Sure seems light years ahead of my 1966 Mustang with GT brakes (both feet on pedal into turn 11 at Sears Point). I have the Willwood calipers on my coupe, but retained the solid disk. http://xks.com/shop/jaguar/ACCDetail.aspx?catID=4912 If I eventually run the car on track, I'll go to vented rotors.
Yep, I agree my 65 XKE stops quite well with stock brakes. I'm sure the wilwood would be a step up, but I don't think I'm in danger of not stopping if someone or something jumps out in front of me. Where in NJ are you? I'm in Brooklyn
