Sad by McLaren as my choice

The only one with a huge hangup about MSRP here is you. I don't think the 458 owners care about the value of your car, how you value theirs, or how the general public would guess at their relative pricetags. If you move in such shallow social circles that this is of critical importance, then you need a new social circle.

However, failing that, and if you still want a direct status symbol of money, then I suggest being direct. Walk around with a big bag of cash tied to the front of your belt and you can swing it about for everyone to admire. If your enemies are seated, you could dangle it right in their faces. In Scotland, we call this a sporran. Perhaps, instead of selecting a traditional aesthetic, you could get one blinged up with some second-hand gold-plated currency symbols (formerly used in rap videos) that you can tell everyone were purchased new and are solid 18ct at the very least.

If anyone questions the contents of your sporran as inadequate, just say that's all you could muster the strength to carry without severely hindering your mobility. At this point, you could produce some notorized bank statements with which to impress them - but first have some discreet friends wire some temporary funds in there and take out a few payday loans to really bulk up the balance on the printout.

I own a 2014 MP4-12c, I LOVE this auto soooo much. I have had it now for three years and have 29,000 miles, I reside in northern CA, if you are ever in the area let me know and I will pick you up at the airport in my MP4.
I drive my MP4 Everyday, this is a SuperCar one can drive from home, go through a McDonalds drive through, take to the track and enjoy for a few laps and then take on a road trip to the Rocky Mountains at 9500 feet high and put most other autos to shame because I will get 28 mpg and have all my performance where as most other autos will choke due to altitude alone.
this auto is so reliable and comfortable there is no other auto I would even want to consider right now though yes, I have always admired a Ferrari F12, yet with that big 12 cylinder motor I go to u-tube and cannot find evidence it can go past 199 mph where as my MP4 has all sorts of u-tube going to 215-217 mph and I saw one there going 226 mph though not sure if it had a tune on it. Magazines has documented the MP4 in going 0-60 as quick as 2.6 seconds, show me any Ferrari doing this. Plus you speak of resale value, NOTE: a Ferrari is not meant to be driven more than a total of 3,000 miles, after that its values drops like a rock and no one wants it any more. where as my MP4 now has 29,000 miles on it and it is just being broken in and it actually runs better than it did when it was new!!! Ferraris are great to look at but a McLaren you can look at and drive to enjoy it fully! Ferrari is very comfortable, at least the F12 is but the MP4 is compared to being more comfortable than a Rolls Royce. Ferrai did not win best driver's auto or best motor etc awards the MP4 has. Did you know the MP4 is in two exotic publication and aside from the astonishing McLaren F1 it is the only other McLaren to be in them. one is the McLaren book listing all the MP4 Formula One autos. The MP4-12c is in it because it was designed completely by McLaren's racing department without ANY compromises. None of the other McLarens are in this book except for the F1, this is a major honor.
The other book is independent by Codling called "Form Follows Function" The art of the SuperCar. it states the MP4 we own is one of the 20 most beautiful super autos in automotive history, now that is a major honor by an independent author. I hold these two books and just shiver all over with how fortunate I am to own this auto.
Next, did you know the MP4-12c is already in an automotive museum in England!!! it is only a few years old and already achieved this highest honor!!!
I also want to add, I cannot really afford a SuperCar, I purchased my after looking at ALL other autos including the F12 and finally got it when I had only three months left to live according to my doctors, I had terminal cancer... within two weeks of getting my MP4 the doctor stated and wanted to know what was going on with me because I was changing, my blood count was going in the wrong direction and she thought I might have been eating some sort of super food I discovered etc. I told her the only change in my life was getting my MP4. My primary doctor, even though extremely busy wanted to come out and see my auto, she said WOW it makes sense!!! she insisted on a ride, again despite how busy she was. I was supposed to die in the next three months, instead, according to my doctor, my MP4 made me soooo happy it strengthened my immune system so much it COMPLETELY erased all signs of my terminal cancer!!! My MP4 has been documented to cure cancer, will it work for others, I cannot make that claim, but it worked for me so why not others, what have you got to lose, I am willing to help others give it their all...
Also, hey, this is the first McLaren to start the new dealership and it has proven to be a major success, there is sooo much heritage in this auto, look out, it may end up being highly sought after and sorry, there were only few built, it is not like a 458 which it beats and out handles easily and was produced in large numbers, the MP4-12c is a very elite auto and an experience only a few will ever realize and truly get to enjoy!!!
the prices people are selling the MP4 for right now is a joke, so much so people are actually scared to purchase one thinking it will drop more. Do not be fooled, these autos dropped in price because those who purchased them have too much money and only want the latest McLaren, they did not even go to any other manufacturer like Ferrari except for maybe one or two. the sellers of the MP4 mostly drive their auto on the track and the newer McLarens do not have the top speed of a MP4 but they have a bit more mid-range torque to put ever more Ferraris etc. in their place.
I can go on and on but right now I go out in the rain to enjoy my MP4, I love the way the single wiper blade is sooo efficient, fluid even come out of the blade, not onto the autos behind you, lol and the visibility is astonishing compared to virtually any other auto. Hey people, do on t take my word for it, see and experience for yourself while you still can...

 

What no one has said in this thread yet is that the mclaren spyder has terrible resale value because it just doesn't look sexy or Exotic, like mclarens newer models or Ferrari models do

The mp12 had such a dated look it merely looked like an update of the 1990s f1. It had a dated look from the time it was new. When the p1 and 650/675 models came out , it looked so dated , few supercar owners are interested in buying them now . Or being caught embarrassed in such a dated looking car that's really just three years old but looks like a 1998 model . That's why their values are so low

You say you are getting quoted of 60-80k by people such as the mclaren service advisor . Mclaren dealerships do indeed only pay $60-80k as trade ins and from dealer auctions . Looking at retail asking prices in the Internet has no relation to what dealers are paying .

 

It really is. My 63 year old mother drove one when she was looking for an exotic. It bored the **** out of her.

I like how the 458 is a "poser" car when he purchased an aesthetically modified car that he cannot afford and is worried how he comes off in his group of "friends". I think Middle East and poser come hand-in-hand. The cars become less of an experience and more of a statement.

The OP sounds like an incumbent ******bag and should sell his car and buy a Platinum trim Ford Fusion and be able to ridicule base model Fusion owners so he feels accomplished. I hate the ME's car culture for this very reason, I just love the cars.

 

Wholesale in the US is around $130k btw...

Oh god- even worse. You had your "new" car for less than a year and the vastly superior 650s came out making yours instantly obsolete. Really how do you show your face in public with a car that will be 2 generations old as soon as the p14 is shown next month.

 

Your mp12 is a pos hence why it was replaced so quickly. I feel bad for you, having to suffer through life driving a used car. Does. Your father even speak to you? Are you allowed to park in his driveway?

Joe- I only drive real cars. not used ones that are not worthy of my high stature. I mean, I would not get caught dead in a MP12 let alone a used MP12. Who would submit themselves to that kind of shame. My parents would disown me if I drove a used mclaren. They have raised me better. I dont know how the OP does it- bringing shame upon his whole family driving a car such as he does.

 

Remember when it was stated that outside of the US, people don't use, or much understand sarcasm, tongues in proverbial cheeks and the like?

If you think it's embarrassing being caught driving a McLaren...I cry everyday I step foot in my base model Civic LX, loathing my existence, man, I'm such a POS, BUT, what keeps me going is the VTEC race blood pumping through the Automatic gearbox in my Honda, as I grip the pleather steering wheel, and peg that sucker at a blistering 68 MPH through the chicane...I can feel Sir Stirling in my right foot, and Lauda in my hands. These are break neck speeds, don't get it twisted for a second!

 

I think the sarcasm is not being understood outside the US nor inside.

at the end of the day- I truly hope the OP is pulling a fast one on all of us, pretending to be upset that he is being ridiculed because his car is not new. Pray that is not reality.

For clarification incase anyone did not get the humor. The MP12C is a fantastic car, new or used and to whine about it on a public forum is just mind boggling.
