Well, I leave home on Wednesday to have surgery on my back Thursday. I plan on cleaning up my cars tomorrow and put them away for the winter since I likely won't be able to drive them again before the snow flys here in Montana.

I was just looking at the odometers on the cars and this summer:

After replacing the clutch with a rebuilt twin disc from Plugzit I have managed to put a whopping 38 miles on the car this year. Sad.

The 355 I managed to get 484 miles on but 420 of that was a single one day trip. Sad.

But I guess those were better then my 69 camaro which I put about 1 mile on.

I really need to slow down next summer and enjoy these things.

I drive mine during the autumn and winter so I don't really care how many miles I put on it during the summer.

Yeah Montana has some drawbacks for these things. The driving season "summer" can go by way faster then you want. And the roads can be a bit rough.

Well my insurance company just called me (Aetna) and completely denied my surgery 3 days before it was supposed to happen. I'm speechless, I have so much lined out with work and missing work etc. ive been planning my life around it, then Aetna just calls up after its been scheduled for a month and says "na, it's not going to happen."

Sorry to hear all that. Hope the winter allows you to heal well.

Randy (Shootfighter), I was in SC this weekend and thought of you. How did you make out in Charleston? I was at Clemson and it was not epic like there.

My head is just spinning right now and I'm dumbfounded. I've had no less then 4 doctors agree that this surgery is a must and can't wait. Now Aetna's on the payroll doc. Says he thinks I can live without it. If he was here right now I'd break his back and see how he likes it.

My employer ConocoPhillips has brought a guy up to North Dakota from Louisiana to take my place when I was to be recovering. They are going to be happy to hear about this Im sure.

Yeah you need to get a lawyer involved
Sometimes they will hold back a surgery to the next quarter for accounting reasons.

Typical stuff if 4 dr's agree then they are in the wrong and a lawyer will get it going. Took me a couple years if I remember correctly, therapy, epidurals more therapy

Tell then you need to see a shrink because you cant live like this and feel like your going to do somethign extreme.

Keep puching and dont take it personal

Yeah, this has been coming for years. I've done the epidurals and many rounds of physical therapy trying to hold it off, but it's gone now I can't move enough to even attempt therapy. I can not live like this, I've been counting down the days. I don't understand how they could do this to me. I hate sounding like a ***** but I'm just trying not to have a break down right now.

Yeah I here you it will get there, just dont take it personal it's business
I know you get all ready for surgery then NOT LOL. I am so numb to surgeries when they put it off I'm like cool more time to mess up. Don't let it get to you

I have to do yoga everyday to keep stuff under control. They want to do my hips but I will wait as they are messed up in a weird spot for bike crashes so standing is OK but cant sit so I just stand

Spend your own money to get the surgery and contact a lawyer and go through the appeals process or whatever is provided for in your contract. Also you may have other contractual and statutory rights. I've had clients proceed in this manner and it worked out well for them. At any rate, it doesn't make any difference because your health comes first. If necessary sell one of the cars. We shouldn't allow insurance companies to control our lives.

They said the surgery will be about $85k. I can't risk it. When I found out it was going to be that much and the insurance was going to only cover 60% I was contemplating putting my 355 up for sale but Tim / SoCal talked me down for the moment and I was just going to see how it worked out. Now they changed to denied 0 coverage. I can't risk having to pay it.

I'm just sitting out here along in the garage contemplating life. The view does help me feel better.

hospitals and docs bargain all the time. The $85k is the cost shifted amount. You are paying for those who cannot. So you go to the doc before they cancel the surgery and say what will it take for you to do my surgery cash? You do the same to the hospital. You would be surprised at the real cost they will take. Often you make a deal with the doc 1st. Ask the doc to call the hospital and see what they will take. You might be surprised to find out the doc will take a few thousand for an hour's work and the hospital will take $20k for a 3 day stay which is still 3 times the rate of the 4 seasons hotel! Try it you got nothing to loose. The insurance co can still be on the hook later and they would be on the hook for things that come up outside the surgery. My wife got $6k worth of hospital for $600 bucks!

I'm sorry but I'm failing to see what you're risking. Is it your good health and being potentially pain-free versus perhaps losing some money that you apparently have?

Yeah, appearances can be deceiving. Things have been going wrong for me for a while. I barley have a couple thousand bucks to my name. I can't risk going into debt like that right now. Risk my daughter being able to continue college. My family would be better off if I just went for the $.50 bullet option.

Fee for service hospital. I have not used them, but I have been following them for several years after contacting them about one of my patients for Orthognathic surgery. Very interesting health care model.

You could consider doing the surgery outside the country for a fraction of the cost.

This is very good advice. Long story very short I was involved with a large business interruption case for a client hospital a few years ago and the financial review disclosed that the hospitals "expected" rate of return on billings was 47%. Simple math says that makes your out of pocket much more possible. Like they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Worth considering this approach.
