How important is it to use the Safely Remove Hardware function in windows before removing hardware like a flash drive or external HDD?

I don't know how important, but when I forgot to safely remove the hardware, it didn't even get put onto my flash drive.

Ive never had a problem with it but I still do it sometimes. The only problem I've had with it is when I go from a XP machine to a vista one.
I only unplug the drive when I know the data has been transferred, and that's the way Ive gone about it. Figuring that if its not doing anything then it should be ok, but then why is it there.

I also unplug when I know data has been transferred.
