I've read the threads dealing with the safety switch, but didn't find the answer to wire source. My safety switch is not connected (and is somewhat corroded). I can't find a loose connector nearby. Where does the wire for the safety switch start? The fuel pump or somewhere else? Does anyone have the part number for the safety switch itself (1984 QVmondial).
If the QV is like the 328, the safety switch grounds the coil (primary) of the fuel pump safety switch relay, when the AFM is closed. When key power is applied, the safety switch relay closes. Power from the key switch (in "starter" position only) runs through the normally closed portion of the fuel pump safety relay to activate the fuel pump relay, providing power to the fuel pump. When the AFM opens (air flowing), the safety switch opens, the safety relay deactivates, and ignition power runs through the normally open contact of the safety relay to keep the fuel pump relay active. If the car should stall, the AFM plate closes, the safety switch closes, the safety relay activates, and power is removed from the fuel pump relay, interrupting power to the fuel pump. So the safety switch wire runs from the relay panel to the safety switch at the AFM. If the safety switch circuit is open, the fuel pump should run whenever the key is on.
