I dont sail but I have a friend who took 2 Olympic medals for Argentina 1 for windsurfing 1 for HobieCat He got a silver & a bronze, cant remember which was which
I sailed just about every dinghy, raced lasers, laser2's, j29's, I-14's, and crewed on some big boat races on the great lakes. It truly is a wonderful sport. I dream of retiring to a yacht.
Got to go on a sailboat for the first time this summer, it was a merit 25 and absolutely loved it. I want to go a ton more next summer and am thinking about building a little boat to learn the art in. any suggestions on books or kits?
If you just want to learn the basics, I'd suggest picking up a used 420/FJ or something of that nature. Relatively cheap and you can learn how to handle a larger vessel once you understand how the wind and tiller affect the movements.
or as you know the sailboat really owns me....man I thought old ( oh sorry "classic") f-car maint. was a time consuming burden...spring is coming and man am I behind on the cars and the boat maint. for the season!
Heres some info on my friend, its in spanish but has a cool photo on it http://www.cema.edu.ar/deportes/yachting.html Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Used to do a lot in my college days. IOR 50 ft class. newport bermuda race. Swann regatta's on swan 53. transpac once... not so much any more. no time. big time commitment to race seriously.
It definitely is time consuming. I sail for my university 3 hours a day, 4 days a week. With class and sailing, doesn't leave time for much else.
I love sailing! I have recently restored at 1947 Luke Warner Yawl and own a Catalina 27 as well, here are some pics of my pride and joy! 41 foot 1947 Luke Warner Yawl Inboard Perkins The black and white photo is of her in 1952! Been in boating (sailing) all my life. 100 Ton offshore. I have owned a 30' Catalina for almost 20 years. Also own a 25' Raven Race boat. Cars-boats-cars? And they said owning a Ferrai is expensive.
No sail here... Sea Ray 420 (like shown but with a black and green bottom).. Formally a 320 and a 240 before that. Next will be Diesel! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Catalina 34 and Hunter 36. Great boats, fun to sail. Nothing beats going on the bay and sailing to Tiburon for lunch and a glass of wine. There is nothing better. Dan
