I had the pleasure of paying standard 7.75% Crook County sales tax!
had to produce bill of sale, otherwise no plates! (temps were about to expire!)

I've driven my cars home from the dealer without paying the tax. They just give me a temporary plate & I'm on my way.

Educate me. I thought a "usage tax" referred to leases.

When I have registered my cars at the IL DMV after I have bought them from a private party I have had to fill out a form (I do not recall the #) they refer to it as a "usage tax" form. Since they cannot ding me on tax because I did not buy the car at a dealer they hit you when you register the car. The cost is set up on an incremental basis of your purchase price. As I recall it goes as follows: if your purchase price is less than $15K you owe them $75. If the purchase price is greater than $15K but less than $20K you owe them $750. If the purchase price is greater than $25K but less than $30K you owe them $1,000. Lastly if the purchase price is over $30K you owe them $1,250. That is how I recall it was the last time I registered a car.

I have never had a lease but I understand you just pay your state's tax on each payment of the car, which I guess could be referred to as a usage tax...

Don't pay any taxes in Indianpolis. You'll pay the taxes in California. Try calling the DMV.

I did call the DMV. They said to pay the taxes in Indy. I'll pay the difference here when I register. See my earlier post.

This is correct. I did some research when I was buying my 360 from TX and brought her to CA. From the old DMV site, I once read that I will have to pay only the difference when car gets to registered in CA if the state selling the car collects sales TAX. The new DMV site no longer has that page. However, it now has a online calculator where you can clearly see you get credit for any out of state sales TAX paid. https://mv.dmv.ca.gov/FeeCalculatorWeb/newResidentForm.do

Like most have posted, I have always paid the sales tax when registering in my home state.

Recently I have heard of people buying RVs in some states and having to pay sales tax to the state were the vehicle was purchased even if they lived in another state. The story is that states are going after the revenue instead of allowing another state to get it. It wouldn't surprise me at all!

you pay no sales tax at all in the state you bought it. Ship it to your town with his old plates on the car (or no plates) and when you received the car, take the paperwork to your local BMV and register it and pay tax at the title division. Done deal. You have to pay nothing in Indy at all!!! The dealer really should know this! Call your local BMV and find out for sure!

Agree: you do not pay any sales tax where you buy the vehicle.
You only pay the sales tax in the State and County where you register the car.

I did. My DMV said to pay the taxes in Indy. I will only have to pay another 1.75% here when the car arrives.

One piece of advice: Make sure the sales tax is clearly and accurately shown as a seperate item on the bill of sale. I would ask the dealer to fax a bill of sale for you to approve before paying for the car.
