Great idea, why not just eliminate the "1" from "F1," and make it a spec series. Then, bring on Danica and Tony George. Maybe, "FRL?"

    From F1's site:

"Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has invited tenders for a third party supplier of engines and transmission systems to be used by competitors in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 world championships.

However, existing teams and engine suppliers could still be allowed to build their own engines, providing they are to the same standardised design specified by the third party supplier.

The move to a single engine is one of several ideas being proposed by the FIA as a means of further reducing costs and increasing competitiveness in the sport, which already has a freeze on engine development."

... and that "formula one" will now be abbreviated "CART".

    Let me guess: Ford engines?

    Freaking ridiculous.

If I wanted to watch a spec series running in the desert, I could turn on A1GP.

The idea is just being proposed, it won't happen. The Manufactorers won't allow it and neither will the FIA, because it would mean that Ferrari would be on the same playing field as Honda and it will be a cold day in Hell when Honda becomes World Champion.

This is obviously NOT THE PINNACLE of motorsports at this point.

VIVA ALMS, LMS and all the new technology on the horizon.

Not a bad idea really. The small amount of A1GP we've seen actually had closer competition and more on-track action. You may well be on to something.

At least you get the performance with sportscars.
F1 looks like a spec class parade as it is on TV.
With ALMs when a prototype passes a GT car and you see it blowing by an F430, with its door handles on the ground, you get the sense of how fast and well handling they are.
One can connect to it in a way F1 lost long ago.

Wow..........it's a very sad day to learn that F1 will become a spec-series. I don't know what in the world Bernie and Max are thinking...........they are destroying the sport as we know it.

If there was ever a time for a break-away series to start up, now is the time. I can't imagine that the manufacturers will be happy about a spec-series - how will they showcase their engineering expertise?

Oh, right. With Canada, France, Imola, etc., gone, they'll save money on all that hardware, transporter costs, tires, etc:

Tune in for the X-Box grand prix..

And that will make it easier for Max to manipulate the results, too.

Ridiculous! If it's all Ferrari engines maaaaaaybe, if not then NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

One of the things I, and all tifosi around the world, like about Ferrari is that Ferrari is the only team who have always made their own chassis and engine since F1 started in 1950. (Or maybe someone can correct me here)
    Don't take that away!!!!

Ridiculous, F1 will obviously be a spec series, so much for glamor and exclusivity of F1, Sportscar racing will have superior tech to F1 w a cobimnation of diesel or gas engines, what a joke

The last step will be to restrict the teams to 1 spec of chassis and it's all over. Don't see the upside to the manufacturer teams staying in the sport after that. Privateer's would take over.

News flash: Renault gets 100M deal to provide all F1 engines.
In unrelated news, Renault gets fined 100M for copying McLaren's homework. ;)

Right now F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports.

This is only a proposal and it will never come true. It is a red herring put out there by Mad Max to generate leverage for negotiations. If the FIA would make it official, you can expect a break away series forming faster than we can say "Ferrari". F1 today is run by the car manufacturers and they want to sell their cars not somebody else's engine. It will never happen.
