I'm looking to purchase a 55" LED Samsung .. model UN55B8000 .. 240 hz. It's rather expensive at $3699. Other than the price the tv looks great. Anyone here had experience with LED tvs?

I think they look good, but they are still 1st gen technology. For as expensive as they are, I'd stick with a plasma. The new Panasonic V10 line is awesome.

The 55 Samsung LED has quite possibly the best picture I've ever seen. It's unreal.

You have my support in your purchase! :)

Sansung LED TV's are the best!!!..PERIOD!!!

    Much better than Sony.
FYI....Sansung actually builds the Sony LED TV's at their factory for Sony.

I have had a Samsung TV (67 inch DLP) for nearly 2 years, and not a single problem.

    Thanks,
    UZY

I have a Samsung LED set but it's a DLP, not an LCD like you are looking at.

The LED provides the backlight, and IMO (and it's an opinion based in being a home-theatre 'buff' as well as someone who works very much with electronics and especially lighting), the LED backlight is superior in every way to previous lighting technologies, which include incandescent, HID and fluorescent. The LED is generally more even in illumination and more true in color (CRI), and more power efficient, lasts much longer and will provide a better light for a longer time than other technologies. I think it's a no-brainer whether it is superior to others.

I am not familiar first hand with the set you mentioned, I have an A750 which is DLP with LED lighting, and I think it is a phenomenal set, it wins or almost wins just about every projector comparison I've seen. My brother has a Sony which uses LCOS and has some advantages, but they are the sort of things you really need to be told about and then look for to see them... in straight-up picture quality, IMO the Samsung is top dog.

Now, that doesn't necessarily relate to the LCD set you're looking at but I would certainly say the LED is a big plus, and has no negatives. For info on the specific set, I'd check out avsforum.com - those guys are as into home theatre as we are into Ferraris, and you can be sure that TV has gone under the microscope of some very knowledgeable guys who will be able to tell you in minute detail all the pro's and con's and how it stacks up to others.

I am also a very big proponent of the golden rule of televisions... the *most* important thing is how it looks to you. I think too many people get tied up in spec sheets and irrelevant details about which TV is better on paper, and often pass on a set that looks great to them for one that has advantages on paper that they either can't see, or even worse, they buy a set which doesn't look as good to them, because it's supposed to be the better set. So, I say look at the set you like, and if it looks as good or better than the other models you like, you should be happy with it.

For the kind of $$ you are spending, I would be sure you have a no-questions-asked return policy, and I would bring some material to view on the set to be sure it meets your needs. If most of your viewing is DirecTV or DVD or BluRay or standard definition TV, I would make sure to see the TV displaying that so you can see how it will be in your living room, rather than just how it looks in the store with the material they will show (that will always portray the TV in it's best light - no pun intended).

My A750 has a bunch of stuff I will never use... like 240Hz refresh... that, by the time those things ever make it to widespread consumer use, the rest of my TV will be outdated anyway.

I have a Sammy LN52A850 and simply couldn't be more pleased. Researched all comparable sets for quite some time before the purchase and by nearly all accounts, Sammy was/is the way to go. Another post recommends checking out the AVSForum and completely agree. You'll find a wealth of information to help make your decision as well as most helpful set up tips, post purchase.

    Buy and enjoy.

LED is the best you can get till they can make OLED cheap enough to produce. I predict a OLED thread in about 5 years.

There's an upstart Korean company called KTV that buys Samsung LED backlit panels
and provides their own electronics. No noticeable difference, but significantly less cost.
I know this because I'm the rep (among numerous other lines) for KTV in my territory,
and personally own their 52" version - INCREDIBLE. Dealer cost is $990 USD - I think the
retail is around $1900. PM me for more info on how to see one yourself where you are.

I saw a bunch of them at CES last January and thought they were amazing. I think Sanyo is going to be making one that's 50 inches but only a half inch thick. They didn't have any pricing so I can't judge the expense. But, for picture quality, LED is much better than LCD and certainly better than plasma, DLP, etc.

What I liked about LED was the brightness, clarity, speed, and the thin glass. My big question was whether it could compete in a world were a 42 inch plasma is $500 on sale on Amazon.

My guess is that in the holiday rush of this year, pricing for every TV will drop significantly. If you can wait another 5 months, you could save quite a bit.

OLED is still years away. It's way too expensive to be competitive. At some point, you have to wonder why anyone would pay 20 or more times as much for a better picture. OLED is by far the best picture though.

Huh? The TV he's talking about is LCD... just the backlight is LED.

How can you say OLED is "by far the best picture" when there aren't really any consumer OLED TV's? It still represents pixels on a screen with tri-colored dots, so to say it is "by far the best picture" isn't correct, IMO. It has advantages, and disadvantages. But since nobody is shopping 60" OLED TV's against 60" LCD TV's, it's irrelevant.

There is also Mitsu's new laser technology, and DLP/LCOS is still being developed, and LCD continues to get better, plus who knows what else will be out in the near future.

The new LED TV's I've seen are clearly superior technology. If they weren't, I don't see why so many manufacturers are looking at producing them because they will be more expensive than current standards. I've seen them side by side with LCD and Plasma at CES. And, they are thinner, brighter, faster, and lighter. That's all I can say.

As to OLED screens, the biggest I've seen was from Sony and was about 14 inches across in letterbox format. And, it's fantastic. Not only is the picture amazing but the glass thickness is only a few MM. From the side, it looks almost invisible. The question of whether to wait for it for big screen TV's was the issue. My opinion is that its years away from being competitive, but technology has a way of creaping up on us faster than anyone imagines.

DLP just doesn't do it for me. Sorry.

The new Samsung LED sets have great black levels for an LCD TV, but the colors are way off target. You'd want to have the set calibrated if you want an accurate image. IMO the new slim plasma by Samsung is hands down a better set. You should do some research on Remote Central.com in the custom installers lounge forum to get some great unbias opinions from people who work with and install these sets on a daily basis.

You'll never want to go to the movie theater again. I have had the UN55B7100 for several months now and cannot begin to say enough about the television. The picture quality is unreal. I have a bunch of friends that are true tech gurus and they all have top of the line Plasmas and DLPs (We're talking about the kind of guys that buy the 20-30k televisions when they are brand new) - they are all jealous and wish they had my TV. FYI - I was able to talk 800 dollars off of my television at Best Buy and had them throw in free delivery. You can get some serious deals there if you negotiate with the right manager. I would negotiate at 3 different Best Buys if you have a bunch in your area and go with the lowest figure. My guess is that you could get them around 3k and free delivery.

    Worth every penny.

I concur with what others have said. I bought my 61" Samsung LED in Aug 2008 and have been very pleased!

My best friend has had a 50" plasma Samsung for 3 yrs and it has had no problems whatsoever.

I bought a 60" Zenith LCS in Feb 2007 from Conn's AS-IS and it turned out to be the lemon from hell. At 8 months the screen was going blue and I had to spend $1400 to get it fixed. Sept 2008 it went out again! (another $1400 to get fixed). It burned out AGAIN 7 months later!

This time I decided to look for another TV instead of just throwing more good money after bad.

My friend has had NO problems with his Samsung plasma and so that is the brand I went with.

A year later I have had NO problems with my 61" Samsung LCD I got from Best Buy and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The picture is incredible!
